A Transport for London worker has helped prevent at least 34 people from taking their own lives.

Rizwan Javed, who works across London’s rail network, has repeatedly stepped in to support people in crisis, helping them get to safety through simple conversations and a willingness to listen.

He received suicide prevention training through the charity Samaritans, where he learned how to recognise the signs that someone may need help. He says many of the life-saving interventions started with something as simple as asking, “Are you okay?”

Rizwan has also used his platform to encourage more open conversations around mental health and break down the stigma surrounding the topic.
