China did not participate in the Olympics until the Los Angeles games in 1984. For the first 90 years it stayed away. This was because it didn't want to embarrass itself for drawing a blank despite having 800 million people.

While Indian sports was mired in officialdom and nepotism, the Chinese were preparing in a big way. They launched an ambitious athletics programme that mirrored that of the US and Russia.

China's medals tally also reflects its living standards which are much higher compared with India.

More importantly, China's athletics programme is driven by fierce national pride and the ambition to harvest as many medals as it can - not by govt jobs, sports quotas, caste, state or bribes from parents.

In India, wrestling is dominated by Haryana and that has shut out wrestlers from other states. Wrestling has become completely politicized.

Hockey is dominated by Punjab. In the 1980s, the ace left forward Zafar Iqbal spoke on TV that Punjab officials and coaches were selecting Punjab players for the national team at the expense of youth from other states.

Such nepotism and favouritism is unthinkable in China. Hence, it leads the world at the Olympics.
