The world is full of serious challenges: food security, hunger, famine—problems that matter. When problems are presented with agency and action, the brain rehearses hope instead of fear. Students then understand the that the future begins now.
Almost ten years ago, my International Development and Social Enterprise class partnered with Bibine Olibry to start a fish farm in Lake Peligre in the Plateau Central of Haiti. Only 38% of all social enterprises survive after one year, thanks to the people, this one survives.
There are many portals to Design Thinking. Machines, software, process, and projects are all entry points and motivators for different students. One piece at a time, great teachers assemble coherence one piece at a time.

St. Andrew's students and Haitian partners through D!Lab's social entrepreneurship course created a fish farm that sells at discounts to women supporting their households- valuable support, jobs and protein to the local community of Cange, Haiti. #saes, #socialentrepeneurship
Try this before your next meeting. Randomly tear a sheet of copier paper. Hand the torn pieces of paper to your neighbor. They assemble the pieces into a scene, a sculpture, a creature.... whatever creativity inspires. What do the pieces say to you? #designthinking#design#CTTL
With this cork animal challenge, design thinking simultaneously built CAD skills, exacting measurement, and creativity in the service of making learning visible.
(Note: the red coral is part of a pre-1960 collection for purposes of teaching).
Change in a school is often predicated upon the involvement of parents. Colegio Merici parents demonstrated their enthusiastic commitment today to problem based learning and design thinking as I rolled out the first phase of a ten year strategic plan to elevate, inspire and grow.
