Mali 🇲🇱 has formally shifted the status of its languages, replacing French as an official language with 13 national languages, including Bambara, Tamasheq and Songhay. The National Transitional Council unanimously approved the change today, with 122 votes in favor and none against.
The decision implements the 2023 Constitution, which established the national languages as the country’s official languages. French will remain the working language of the administration.
The 13 languages named in the law are Bambara (Bamanankan), Bomu, Bozo, Dogon, Peul (Fulfulde), Hasanya, Mamara, Malinké (Maninkakan), Soninke, Songhay, Sénoufo (Syenara), Tamasheq and Khassonké.
Lawmakers said the changes aim to prevent discrimination against speakers of these languages. The text was revised after the Constitutional Court called for clearer wording earlier this year.
The change marks a formal move away from French’s official status and toward the languages spoken by most Malians.
