VIDEO | As the film industry celebrates Guru Dutt's 100th birth anniversary, author Yasser Usman shares his insights on the legendary filmmaker's life and career.
He says, "I think my fascination was with the contradiction in his life and his career," Usman says. "When I started reading about him, I realised that when he was creating these masterpieces, when he was creating 'Pyaasa', 'Kagaaz Ke Phool', and 'Sahib Bibi Aur Gulam', simultaneously his personal life was in severe turmoil. He was trying to end his life. There were multiple suicide attempts."
He further adds, “Despite numerous books and documentaries on Guru Dutt, Usman believes that the filmmaker remains an enigma. "Guru Dutt's voice is completely missing. Almost 98% of what we know about Guru Dutt is via or through the memories of people who knew him professionally or personally."
