1. A bittersweet moment for me when I read the article by Michael Dougherty "Without the Greyhound bus, it’ll be much more difficult to discover Canada"
That was me, 20 years ago "of modest means" wanting "to see the true wilderness"

US Coast Guard Launches Monitor Drones on the Great Lakes
Excerpt: The drones are wind- and solar-powered vessels ... to monitor the Great Lakes, gather critical weather data for emergency response planning, “track illicit activity & keep maritime borders safe.”
Children have utterly let down to date. But what does a ‘social media ban’ actually mean? Is this really age verification for all? And what does that entail? Because on the surface this looks like rushed populist techsolutionism that will hand *more* power to the platforms.

Regarding Bill C-34, the Safe Social Media Act ... social media addiction isn't just a problem for 16 & younger. These platforms need to be safe for all people. Regulate the platforms, not the people.
Do you want Elon to have a copy of your biometrics? Do you want Zuck to scan your face? That’s what we will all be doing. This isn’t reigning in Silicon Valley power. It’s gifting them even more power.
Of course, parents want these companies safe and regulated but that’s a job for govt, not the end user.
A “done deal”? If that is so, my Toronto riding will be orange in the next federal election. After all, it’s already represented provincially by the NDP.
After reading the Q&A with @Greg_Sorbara in the @TorontoStar this morning, it's hard not to feel the Billy Bishop Airport is a done deal.
He can't even get the Minister of the Environment, Julie Dabrusin (and a Toronto MP), to return his emails.

It seems like all of Toronto’s Liberal MPs have been muzzled. We don’t know if they are for or against the Toronto Island airport expansion. They won’t even stand up for their conviction. So cowardly.
Are Toronto's Liberal MPs going to stand up for us?
We are taking the fight to Ottawa on June 10th.
Message your MP and tell them to stop the airport expansion.

In this article, we have a strong response from Liberal MP Rob Oliphant, who recognizes the important role city plays in the tripartite agreement, and that expanding Pearson makes a lot more sense! https://t.co/hQjdlkZUxm #topoli#cdnpoli
So let me get this straight…
Doug Ford can take a 102-day summer break with full pay, taxpayer-funded pensions, benefits, travel budgets, and perks while classrooms are overcrowded, hospitals are understaffed, ERs are closing, and families are struggling to survive?
Teachers are being told there’s “not enough money” for smaller class sizes, educational assistants, special education supports, or properly funded public schools.
Healthcare workers are burning out. Parents can’t find family doctors. Students are falling through the cracks. But Queen’s Park gets a 3+ month vacation?
How is this acceptable?
And before anyone says politicians still “work behind the scenes,” most Ontarians don’t get 102 days off with six-figure salaries and guaranteed pensions while the systems WE pay for collapse around us.
Public education and healthcare are not luxuries. They are the backbone of a functioning society.
Maybe if politicians had to live in overcrowded classrooms, wait 14 hours in ERs, or watch children lose supports because there aren’t enough EAs, they’d stop treating public services like a budget line to cut while protecting their own comfort.
Ontario deserves better than a government that always seems to find money for itself while telling everyone else to lower their expectations.
At a time when ocean temperatures are smashing records and scientists are still trying to understand how fast the system is shifting under climate change, they are talking about scrapping a 368 million dollar early warning network that has ALREADY BEEN PAID FOR by tax payers.
This is not just a few sensors in the sea. It is a network of ~900 instruments measuring temperature, currents, carbon, chemistry and ecosystem change. It was designed to deliver long term data over decades.
This would effectively end key long running records and that matters because ocean data only becomes powerful over time. You cannot rebuild a continuous climate record once it is interrupted.
Doug Ford is making another trip to the US to mingle with billionaires. Does anyone actually believe he's going to help everyday Ontarians, especially after voting to destroy Toronto’s waterfront for American bankers to cash in?
Ronny Chieng had one message for Harvard grads during his commencement speech: destroy AI.
"Look, a lot of other respected graduation speakers in colleges around America are talking about you guys needing to master AI for the future. I'm here to tell you the mission of your generation is to destroy AI...
"And I know, I know there's someone sitting out here right now who’s just like, 'Well, you know, what about the use of AI to pioneer breakthroughs in medicine and physics?' Well, first of all, shut up, nerd. I'm not talking about that. Obviously, if you're using it for that purpose, you're not the problem.
"I'm talking about the accumulation of cognitive debt due to excessive use of large language models according to a study by MIT published in 2025. That's right, MIT. MIT did that study. I guess you guys were too busy giving each other A's. Feel free to boo MIT, by the way, and AI, and yourselves, I guess.
"Look, this is actually good news, okay? This is why you guys shouldn't be scared of AI, because I think AI is just going to end up making mediocre people dumber. Have you heard how dumb people brag about how they use AI? They're always like, 'Hey, did you know that AI can now read my email, summarize it, and drop a response?' Yeah, you know who else can do that? Me. I can do that. You can't do that? How useless are you? You need artificial intelligence just to match me? I'm a dumb*ss who couldn't get into Harvard.
"From what I can see, getting an actual advantage from AI in the future will require a minimum escape velocity of intelligence that I'm assuming you guys from Harvard have. Everyone else who can't match that is just going to get dumber, and that's when you run up the score on them, assuming we still have a functioning society, of course.
"But to run up the score, you’re going to have to master your craft. And AI can be the fuel, but fuel is useless if you can't kindle the fire. For example, I recently used AI to use regression analysis to prove that a certain race of people are mathematically terrible at sports. I won't say which race, but thank you for not inviting Hasan Minhaj to Harvard. My point is, learning the fundamentals still matter. If I didn't know what a regression analysis was, and if I wasn't fundamentally racist, would I have been able to do any of that? No.
"Untalented people love bragging about using AI to help them draft their speeches and their scripts and their podcasts and their promo videos for UFC fights at the White House, which to be fair, even if they had filmed that for real, it would still have looked like AI. But what they're missing is this: the creating is the fun part. The best part of comedy writing is figuring out the puzzle pieces of a joke and getting the self-regard from having accomplished a difficult thing. Why would I want AI to take that away from me?
"You know what problem I want AI to solve? I want the problem of AI making everything look like sh*t. I want AI to solve that problem. How about that?
"Or how about, can AI take away the part of comedy writing where my TV pilot gets passed on and when I ask if I can pitch it to someone else, the network says, 'We don't want it, but we also don't want anyone else to have it. We just want you to be sad.' Can AI solve that?
"I recently tried to introduce my friend to Buddhism through a book called Buddhism Made Simple. It was literally a book about Buddhism made simple. And instead of reading it, he used AI to summarize it in 10 seconds. Believe it or not, he didn't reach enlightenment. It turns out speed running Buddhism is completely missing the point.
"And I know this platitude is almost worthy of AI, but the reason shortcuts to skip to the end aren't always good is because the journey isn't just how we acquire skills. The journey is the point of all this. It is! It turns out maybe the real Harvard was the friends we made along the way.
"Look, I know this won't apply to everyone's industry, but I'm just saying whatever your chosen profession is, please don't let AI rob you of the fun part of it.
"I think your generation's upcoming battle won't be humans against AI. That's at least two months away. It's going to be people with substance versus people with shallow knowledge. It’s going to be mastery versus faking it. It's going to be people with good taste versus tacky. I trust you will put in the work necessary to be on the right side of those battles."
Doug Ford ran on protecting Ontario from American threats.
Then he handed Toronto’s waterfront to JP Morgan.
Nieuport Aviation, controlled by America’s largest bank, owns the Billy Bishop terminal. They bought it for $750 million and have been losing money ever since. So Ford introduced legislation to seize Toronto’s own land, override the city, and deliver the airport expansion JP Morgan needs to make its investment whole.
One of the lobbyists pushing this deal? A former senior Ford aide. The revolving door didn’t even slow down.
The Building Billy Bishop Act lets Ford expropriate almost all of the Toronto Islands. City officials warn it means gridlock, pollution, and harbour degradation. Nobody asked for this. The only winner is a New York bank.
Captain Canada. Protecting Ontario from the Americans, by handing them our waterfront.
Mark Carney has the power to stop this. And he’d better!!
Powerful words by 102 years old philosopher Edgar Morin, one of France's most revered intellectual figures, as well as a Jewish WW2 resistant who fought as a lieutenant in De Gaulle's France combattante.

Here are his words on Gaza: "I am both astonished and outraged by the fact that those who represent the descendants of a people who were persecuted for centuries for religious or racial reasons... That the descendants of this people who are today the decision-makers of the State of Israel, that they could not only colonize an entire people, partly drive them out of their land and seek to expel them for good... But also, after the massacre of October 7, engaged in a real massive slaughter on the populations of Gaza and continue, incessantly, hitting civilians, women, and children.
And to see the silence of the world, the silence of the United States, protectors of Israel, the silence of the Arab states, the silence of the European states who claim to be defenders of culture, humanity, human rights.
I think we are living through a horrible tragedy because we are also powerless in the face of this thing that is unleashing. At least, I say: bear witness! The only thing that remains if we cannot resist concretely is to testify. Let's resist in our minds, let's not be fooled, let's not forget, let's have the courage to face things head-on."
The Billy Bishop Airport isn't an under-utilized jewel to be expanded.
It's sitting on 210 acres of Toronto's real & unique jewel: the Toronto Islands.
Unless I'm missing something, no other major city in the world overlooks a fresh water harbour and island paradise like this.
Great turnout at the Fight Ford protest today at Queens Park! Saw dozens of NoJetsTO signs, and encouraged the crowd to chant “Hands Off Our Waterfront!” #topoli#onpoli
A perfectly calm morning on a boat surrounded in the morning mist as the sun rises. It doesn't get any more serene than this!
Burin Newfoundland, Canada.
🚨 Breaking 🚨
JP Morgan hired lobbyists to lobby the Ford Conservatives & federal Liberals to expand Billy Bishop... and they may have broken the rules governing lobbyists.
