Women action for cleaner coasts!

This International Women’s Day, we want to honor our change makers who are making remarkable progress.

Penthakotta, one of the biggest urban ghetto of marine fishers in India is located 500 meters away from the Bay of Bengal tide lines. Home to nearly 12000 families, an average of 1.5 kg of solid wastes are generated per day from each household. Unlike other human settlements in Puri, the Swachh Sabari vehicle services were not accessibility to these families. This resulted in large quantities of waste being directly dumped in the ocean. In partnership with HCLFoundation and SPANDAN, 1100 women in 75 SHGs led and organized coastal cleanup campaigns. Furthermore, these women leaders requested the local municipal officer to provide the Swachh Sabiri vehicle services to these areas. As a result of this, the Swachh Sabiri services are now active and waste is picked up daily from these communities. And now, dumping waste in the ocean has slowly stopped and the communities are becoming cleaner. Leadership and collaborative efforts by the women SHG groups have sowed the seeds to a cleaner and more aware community.
