A missed promotion at 34 is not a missed title.
It is a structural reset of the base every future raise, bonus, and 401(k) match is calculated from for the next 25 years.
The decision takes minutes. The cost is paid for decades.
Promotion decisions are made in talent reviews.
Five variables must align in one meeting: business need, budget flexibility, low compression impact, replacement risk, political acceptance.
Performance rating is table stakes.

Most wealth is still built inside corporate.
The edge is leverage, not escape.
Most people read this backwards.
Jobs don’t get protected because AI can’t do them.
They get protected because no one wants to own the risk of removing them.
In the rooms I’ve been in, it comes down to:
Is this person tied to revenue?
Do they own something that can blow up?
Are they actually making decisions, or just feeding them?
If the answer is no… those roles get compared pretty quickly.
AI just speeds that up.
The shift isn’t avoiding “exposed jobs.”
It’s getting closer to revenue, risk, or real decisions.
A lot of what you see on LinkedIn and X isn’t even advice from accomplished expert's.
It’s creators talking to other creators.
Same ideas. Slightly different packaging.
Meanwhile, most professionals are trying to figure out how to actually build income and stability in the real world.
Howard Marks is right. But unpredictability isn’t evenly distributed.
The professionals most exposed aren’t the ones at the top or the bottom. They’re in the middle, doing solid work, hitting their numbers, assuming stability because nothing has gone wrong yet.
AI doesn’t create the uncertainty. It just removes the buffer that was hiding it.
The ones who navigate this aren’t predicting the future. They’re making themselves harder to remove regardless of what it looks like.
Data center spending passing office spending for the first time tells you exactly where corporate investment is going.
It’s not going to the workforce that built those offices. It’s going to the infrastructure that will eventually replace parts of it.
The professionals who understand this aren’t asking whether AI will affect their job. They’re asking which roles sit close enough to revenue, risk, and decisions that the org can’t afford to automate them away.
That’s the only question that matters right now.
Nobody is quitting because the calculus has changed.
Walking away from a corporate salary, benefits, and equity in this environment is a different risk than it was three years ago.
But staying isn’t the same as being safe. The professionals who think they’re protected because they haven’t quit are finding out in October what was decided about them in March.
Staying is smart. Staying without understanding how the decisions above you get made is a different problem entirely.
15% have never used it. That number will matter more than the 20% using it daily.
Not because AI adoption is required. Because the org will eventually ask which roles depend on human judgment that AI can’t replicate and which ones just got cheaper to replace.
That’s not a technology question. That’s a Replacement Friction question.
