Wondering what Machiavelli had to say about racial difference (spoiler: surprisingly little)? Want to be an anti-racist mensch just like Machiavelli? Then read my article, “Mind the Gap: A Machiavellian Lesson in Anti-Racism” out now with @PolityalsBeruf

It’s kind of ironic how Bad Bunny was dancing on an electrical post at the Super Bowl halftime show.
Puerto Rico isn’t exactly known for having reliable electricity.
He could have highlighted the electrical grid crisis in PR and done some good with his platform, but he chose degeneracy!

“Intelligence Is Always Artificial” — my new essay is out now. 🚀
Per Hegel, intelligence necessarily denaturalizes. It is a *stepping outside of the self,* which AI in its immediacy and bounded algorithm can never do.
Huge thanks to @apa_blog & @gbglax
Did you know that Thomas More, coiner of the word utopia, opposed the protocommunists of his time?

When it comes to a Muslim Democrat winning an election, you just need to be at least as normal about it as Bill Kristol. Let's call it The Bill Kirstol Test.
Kirsten Gillibrand has failed the Bill Kristol Test.

In a recent @apsrjournal article, @SalgadoGabe reconsiders the history of the concept of race, challenging us to look beyond 1492 as the moment of race’s emergence. https://t.co/l0OQmabP5H
I do think the most damaging intellectual current within Left analysis is the one that reduces all political/culture/ideology to mechanical expressions of sociological position & interest. As a contradictory yet simplistic discourse it is also instrumentalized by libs + the Right
It’s a real shame that devalues projects that don’t fit into the standard article format—not only direct replies but also things like translations and critical editions
IMO the issue isn’t with peer review as a process or standard but with increasingly demanding tenure requirements—which are themselves linked to the increasing “professionalization” and precaritization of higher ed
I made this graph in 2014, and a decade later I think I understand why open debate in economics declined: the peer review system took over, and the debate moved behind closed doors.
This trend was, moreover, not just confined to economics. Peer review killed open debate.
Journals often have sections for comments or replies but many institutions won’t count them as highly or at all towards tenure if they’re not “fully” peer-reviewed articles. It’s a huge disincentive for anyone on (or trying to get on) the tenure-track to write anything else
Amazing work from Jacob Kripp (currently at @BU_Tweets) showing how anti-Asian violence is central to the modern definition of warfare, while also highlighting the unique Operational Research Office archives and the role of the university in naturalizing mass violence through war
