No amount of fine-tuning will stop #VAR being a catastrophe because its raison d’être - spotting what mere mortals can’t - is also its fatal flaw.
Even if never called upon, its very existence dulls the spectacle because we don’t know when we’re entitled to get excited.
VAR hasn’t just made goals dull; CHANCES are also meaningfully less exciting.
Time was that the lack of a linesman’s flag in an unfolding attack was the cue to get excited.
Now you’ve no idea when to get excited because the flag staying down means nothing. #VAR#hateVAR
@maxrushden@guardian_sport@bglendenning@jonawils@Paolo_Bandini A ball travelling 60mph takes 0.19 seconds to travel 5 meters. Human reaction time is 0.25 seconds. Usually an arm moving towards the ball is just coincidence rather than intent. Shouldn’t referees be taught these kind of numbers?
@maxrushden@guardian_sport@bglendenning@larssivertsen@PhilippeAuclair Is the real tragedy of VAR that for EVERY goal ever scored, our ecstasy is, to some greater or lesser degree, dulled by the uncertainty of whether the technology will allow it?
That's too big a price to pay for a few more so-called 'correct-calls'.
Tottenham away support is always incredible but I can't fucking stand when fans of a premier league club sing "Naaa na na nanana na you're shit" to a League 2 side
@TheTotallyShow If #VAR is used to check every goal, and strikes like Lamela’s are getting chalked off, we’ll literally never be able to celebrate another goal ever again.
@TheTotallyShow What of VAR and Home Advantage? Surely it’s vital the most people have the best chance of seeing their team win. Shouting at officials en mass; the 12th man; sucking the ball into the net...Shouldn’t paying at the gate entitle you to some home advantage? #VAR
