The recent statements by Tom Barrack raise serious concerns about their implications for democratic development in the Middle East. At a time when democratic movements in the region continue to face significant challenges, rhetoric that appears dismissive or undermining of these efforts risks sending the wrong signal.

Those who value democratic principles should approach such positions with scrutiny and respond with clear support for inclusive governance, political freedoms, and the right of societies to shape their own futures. Silence in the face of such messaging may be interpreted as acquiescence, and it is therefore important to voice principled disagreement in a constructive but firm manner.

Iran and proxies have attacked the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (and Kurdish areas in Syria and Iran) by 440+ drones, rockets, and missiles in the past 30 days. Mostly civilian targets have been struck.

A few years ago, the U.S. government recognized and took steps to solve the threat of missile attacks by Iran and its proxies.

From the Fiscal Year 2024 National Defense Authorization Act:

“Not later than July 1, 2024, the Secretary of Defense should provide to the congressional defense committees a briefing on progress of the air defense equipping and training effort against the air and missile threat to Iraq, including in the Iraqi Kurdistan Region.”

Where’s the progress? Is there a report?

(Partial) SOLUTION: U.S. must immediately authorize the direct sale of anti-drone and missile defenses to the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. This authority should be included in the U.S. Congress’s war supplemental bill. The time is now.

U.S. military and commercial interests have also been hit by Iran and its militias operating inside of Iraq.

PDKI’s civilian camps near Koya were targeted today in a missile and drone strike carried out by the Islamic Republic of Iran. These strikes deliberately targeted non-military locations and form part of a continued campaign of aggression by the Islamic Republic against Kurdish opposition parties and civilian infrastructure in the Kurdistan Region.

This latest attack coincides with a broader and intensified wave of attacks across the Kurdistan region of Iraq, including Sulaymaniyah, Erbil, and Duhok, in which dozens of missiles and drones have been used. Over the past month alone, the Iranian regime has launched nearly 500 missiles and drones.
