We mourn the passing of former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, who passed away earlier today, Sunday, December 29, 2024, at the remarkable age of 100. A towering statesman, Carter’s life was defined by service, peace, and the betterment of humanity. He served as the 39th president for one term from 1977 to 1981 and was the longest-lived president in U.S. history.
President Carter’s emphasis on human rights strengthened ties between Jamaica, the Caribbean, and the United States, fostering economic growth and regional stability. His advocacy for renewable energy inspired critical conversations about sustainability, shaping efforts still relevant today.
Through his humanitarian work with The Carter Center, his impact extended globally, promoting health, democracy, and development in vulnerable regions, including the Caribbean.
On behalf of the Government and people of Jamaica, I extend heartfelt condolences to his family, the United States, and all who were inspired by his extraordinary legacy.
May his life of compassion and integrity continue to guide us toward a more peaceful and just world. Rest in peace.
I note an unfortunate video circulating that misrepresents circumstances at a lecture event last night headlined by South Africa's FM. The event with Min Pandor was scheduled to end at 8, and I had a CARICOM Heads meeting on Haiti that was set to accommodate my participation in that event! I advised Minister Pandor and the moderator - waited as long as I could (which was to 8:15) but then had to go. Persons heard me advise that I had a meeting and saw the moderator signal for me to leave. It is unfortunate that this inaccurate narrative would be pushed on social media when such rich discussions were held at the event. In a perfect world, maybe the moderator could have emphasized my prior indication and reason for departure. The PS and CTD of the Ministry remained in the event that any questions were posed, which required a response from GoJ - and I am advised that none were.
@DamionMitch@ncbja This is so stupid. In a country that has high crime rates, we are moving AWAY from online banking to cash banking? This company is heading to the dark ages. Very disappointing.

I'm usually at pains to defend media in Jamaica because most critics are unaware of the issues faced by journalists here Secondly most critics are not exactly over achievers in their chosen profession. But zip 103 lauding that clown is embarrassing to say the least. Indefensible
