Today, I join the people of Sierra Leone, Africa, and the global community in extending my heartfelt congratulations to Her Excellency Dr. Fatima Maada Bio, First Lady of the Republic of Sierra Leone, on the historic adoption by the United Nations General Assembly of the resolution establishing 27 November as the International Day for the Elimination of Child, Early and Forced Marriage. following her tireless global advocacy on behalf of girls and women.
Your Excellency, your unwavering commitment through the Hands Off Our Girls campaign and your continued advocacy for the rights, dignity, education, and protection of girls have carried Sierra Leone’s voice to the global stage. Today, that voice has helped inspire a landmark international commitment and establishment of 27 November as an annual day of observance.
On behalf of my family, the SLPP leadership and the countless young people whose future is brighter because of your advocacy, I salute your courage, resilience, and determination. You have demonstrated that when Sierra Leone speaks with conviction on issues affecting our children and women, the world can listen.
Congratulations, Your Excellency. This is not only your victory; it is a victory for Sierra Leone, a victory for Africa, and above all, a victory for every girl whose childhood, education, dignity, and future must be protected.
May God continue to give you strength and wisdom as you champion the cause of our girls and women.
The HEROES for Gender Transformative Action concluded with a moment of appreciation for the partners and districts whose commitment helped drive six years of transformation.
The recognition celebrated the collective effort behind the programme bringing together government, district local governments, development partners, civil society, communities, health workers, teachers and young people.
From strengthening health systems and improving access to SRHR services to empowering young people and supporting communities to address SGBV, HEROES has been a journey built on partnership.
The event also recognized the nine districts where the programme has worked, acknowledging their role in implementing interventions, strengthening local systems and ensuring that the programme's work reached communities.
The presentation of appreciation awards and certificates, together with the handover of legacy boards to district representatives, provided a meaningful conclusion to the six-year journey. The legacy boards symbolised each district's commitment to sustain the gains and legacy of HEROES4GTA.
As we celebrate the achievements of the programme, we also recognise that lasting change is never the work of one organisation. It is built through shared responsibility, collaboration and continued commitment.
To all our partners, district leaders, local governments, health workers, community organisations, teachers, young people and everyone who contributed to HEROES4GTA:
Thank you for six years of partnership, empowerment and gender transformation.
The programme may be closing, but the responsibility to sustain its gains continues.
What to take forward from HEROES: the partnerships, the lessons and the commitment to keep building stronger communities.

#FGM is often described as tradition. But it involves the partial or total removal of external female genitalia for non-medical reasons, causing lifelong harm to health, sexuality, and dignity. FGM remains a violation of bodily autonomy and human rights. It is part of gender-based violence.
When it comes to HIV infection In ankole subregion, 4 out of every 5 newly infected people are female. Is structural violence pushing our youngsters into illness? We hear stories about people who are forced into marriages, abduction of young girls for marriage and other dangerous sexual abuses to young girls. We are letting them down. We need to call out dangerous cultural practices that endanger children. #HIV
