The "coma world" episodes were inspired by the passing of John Patterson, a regular Sopranos director and close friend of David Chase. The Kevin Finnerty storyline is an imagining of a bardo; a Buddhist concept of the afterlife, where the soul goes on a journey to detach itself all of it's earthly identity for it to move on.
