Nobody is talking about the Realfake. The real event that is presumed fake.

Soon enough, you will be able to call anything a deepfake and people will believe you. Go ahead, try it.

We have already reached the point where the conditions of reality themselves are coming under the horizon of a kind of universal plausible deniability.

How long before I can point to any picture of myself on the Internet and tell you that it was just generated by a model that has been trained on my face?

Weapons of mass creation.

The Internet becomes an unstable archive for memories, and the falsifiability of memory itself comes into question.

It is already so easy to lie on the Internet. But now it becomes newly possible to lie to oneself, with infinite potentially generated reality in the imagination there to substantiate the lie. If there is footage of my candidate saying something I don't like, I can simply just choose not to believe it, and there will be an army of commenters there to tell me it is not real.

Generalized Turing Paranoia will haunt communication pervasively. It is not just that I can choose to believe a real image is fake, it is that I can choose to believe any words I read were written by a computer, even when they were not.

The chain of suspicion is exponential. Watch as communication becomes enframed by suspicion. We only see the earliest whispers of this now in the education system when we look and see teachers accusing hardworking students of using ChatGPT to write papers.

But this is nothing, we are just in the first days of the arms race.

And the real horror of the situation is this: there is no off-switch. The adversarial nature of the problem means that any attempt to 'counter' the deepfake will function as dual-use weaponry. Deepfake countermeasures accelerate the production of better deepfakes. There will be no regaining what we are now watching ourselves lose.

The more unstable information becomes the more the incentive for an arms race over the control of the means of producing information. Uncertainty is the condition of any arms race.

In politics, we will watch as all sides and sects Realfake the rough edges of their realities into nonexistence. Political economy itself is Realfaked, as the modus operandi of politics shifts from the management and control of public-facing liars to the curation and grooming of cults of plugged-in dreamers who have been taught to lie to themselves in an increasingly elaborate spiral of reality-selection.

Control society responds by attempting to securitize the field of information. Watch as they try and corral the models into corporate hands, mandate prison time for deepfakes, and so forth.

Of course, we know it is already too late for any of this to matter. There is no closing Pandora's Box. And yet, as the arms race accelerates and the condition of reality degrade further, we will observe the rise of a new regime of policing carried out in the name of 'healthy information.'

Many naively imagine that 'AI Safety' is simply about corporate regulations. But the true stakes of AI safety will make themselves clear when it becomes impossible for the state and global governance not to recognize that artificial intelligence is an information weapon. These people think the battle is about regulations on researchers, or large AI labs. But this is not the real battle.

The insidious dimension of AI safety involves its application to the general populace as a tool of control. They begin by replacing your work, your art, and even the conditions of your information with their generative product. Perhaps they will even apologize and give you a universal basic stipend to shop in their mall.

But your reality will be be for rent. Speech and Creation filtered through the standards of the approved Corporate Reality.

And yet, the Realfake escalation will be swift and difficult to contain. Be ready. We do not think they will win.
