The historical trajectories of India and Pakistan, both emerging from negotiated settlements with British colonial rulers in 1947, are often encapsulated by the term “Partition.” This transition primarily involved shifts of power between Delhi and Karachi, predominantly affecting the northern regions of the Indian subcontinent. Despite Bengal’s significant contributions to the anti-colonial struggle and the Pakistan Movement, it was marginalized during these negotiations, resulting in its division and incorporation into Pakistan as East Bengal.

East Bengal, later known as East Pakistan, carried forward the legacy of resistance, striving for dignity and rights. Unlike India and Pakistan, Bangladesh did not emerge from a negotiated settlement; rather, it was forged through a people’s war—the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War. Bangladesh achieved victory over the West Pakistani Army through an armed struggle, a testament to the resilience and determination of its people.

While Sheikh Mujibur Rahman played a pivotal role in the events leading up to liberation, his subsequent policies, including the establishment of BAKSAL, undermined the aspirations of 1971. This “Mujibist settlement” rendered the nation’s independence and sovereignty vulnerable, obstructing the full realization of the benefits of victory.

In July 2024, Bangladesh witnessed a renewed struggle culminating in the July Uprising, which liberated the nation from the autocratic governance of Fascist Hasina and external dominance. This victory imbued our independence with its true significance, reinforcing the collective commitment to safeguarding freedom and the ideals of liberation.

With this renewed independence, the New Bangladesh aspires to uphold equality, dignity, and justice, ensuring the practice of democracy and the protection of human rights. As the inheritor of the Indo-Muslim civilization and the epicenter of Bengali culture, Bangladesh is poised to continue its civilizational journey, aspiring to become a prominent entity in the Bay of Bengal region and a leading voice in the Global South.

On this day, we solemnly remember the Founders of Bangladesh and all the martyrs of 1971 and the July Uprising.
