Zacarias Moussaoui was charged with six counts of conspiracy related to the September 11th attacks, including conspiracy to commit terrorism, aircraft piracy, and murder. He was arrested in August 2001 and was the only person charged in the United States in connection with the attacks. After pleading guilty in 2005, he was sentenced to life in prison in 2006 rather than the death penalty, which prosecutors had sought.
