On this significant day for Nakhchivan, I am honored to share Footsteps of Noah, a documentary by 🇸🇪 filmmaker Mikael Silkeberg, exploring 🇦🇿 Nakhchivan region as one of the cradles of ancient civilisation & contributing to deeper international understanding of its rich heritage.

About the film:

Footsteps of Noah is a 40-minute documentary that explores the Nakhchivan region of Azerbaijan as one of the ancient cradles of human civilisation - a land where myth and history intertwine, and where cultural memory has been preserved across millennia.

The film takes as its point of departure the ancient legend of the Prophet Noah, whose ark came to rest near Mount Gamigaya. From this symbolic and spiritual starting point, the documentary unfolds a layered narrative that traces Nakhchivan’s deep historical roots, presenting the area as a crossroads of early human settlement. The ancient petroglyphs carved into the rocks of Gamigaya stand as silent witnesses to prehistoric life, linking humanity’s earliest expressions to the present day.

Moving beyond legend, Footsteps of Noah offers a rich visual journey through Nakhchivan’s architectural legacy. The film highlights monumental structures that reflect advanced craftsmanship, including medieval mausoleums and architectural complexes recognized for their universal cultural value.

Equally central to the documentary is Nakhchivan’s intangible cultural heritage. Traditional dances, indigenous musical instruments, and distinctive melodies are woven into the narrative, revealing how cultural expression has been transmitted across generations.

The film also pays tribute to prominent historical and cultural figures associated with Nakhchivan, whose intellectual and artistic contributions helped shape the region’s identity and extend its influence beyond its borders.

Through carefully composed imagery and a reflective narrative tone, Footsteps of Noah portrays Nakhchivan as a living archive - one in which every stone, rhythm, and legend forms part of a broader human story.
