Palestine is also one of humanity’s oldest toponyms, and records of a people named after it are as old as literacy itself.
On the temple of Medinet Habu near Thebes there is inscribed in hieroglyphs the name of the people who had invaded from the North who the Egyptians knew as the ‘Peleset’. The inscription dates from the time of Pharaoh Ramses III, and was carved in 1186 BC. The cuneiform inscriptions of the Assyrians mention the ‘Palashtu’ who lived on the southeastern Mediterranean coast from about 800BCE. The Book of Genesis in 21:34 says clearly that after migrating from the city of Ur, that the Patriarch Abraham lived “in the land of the Philistines.” Herodotus, the Father of History, describes the same area as “Syria Palestina” (Παλαιστίνη) around 480BCE.

Some of the responses think this is about Palestine-Israel so I’ll take the bait. Macklemore has cheapened no cause, and manages to get kicked in the balls and maintains his principles nevertheless. Good on him. He’ll be remembered for this. Sheeran’s mealy mouthed mea culpa will be remembered as being as effective and meaningful as a bandaid on a osteoporitic spine.

There is only an albeit slim possibility of economic “war” against Israel in its present form - an expansionist, genocidal apartheid state. As soon as Israel confines itself to its 67 borders I’m frankly not sure the world will care what kind of illiberal and undemocratic projects it pursues, at whatever expense to its political, religious or ethnic minorities.

But the idea that someone from another country has no understanding of American culture or history or politics is pure nonsense. I’ve met plenty of non-Americans here and elsewhere who have a very sophisticated understanding of America. Annaleigh should apply for a passport and get out more.

This thread became wildly funny to me. The only reason I am a “man in Qatar” is because my American company sent me there and this is how X now identifies me for Annaleigh and others who poke around my bio. I am, more importantly and permanently, a natural born American citizen like many other Palestinians, and Chicago (not the suburbs) is my spiritual home. Like I said, we ended up in a lot of different places.

@AliAbunimah @AbdulElSayed Isn’t all political advertising about the electorate on the margins? I’m not convinced that this won’t have the requisite effect on Jewish and Christian voters. Maybe more on the latter, whose efforts at allyship are so often misdirected toward support for Israel.
