The Jobs our children are studying for may not exist tomorrow

Spent this evening with bright young minds at Doon International School Jammu's 10th anniversary celebrations. When I asked the students how many knew what job they would be doing in 2035, most hands went up confidently. Then I shared something that made them pause: research shows that 60% of the careers that will dominate the next decade haven't even been invented yet. The world my generation prepared for and the world these students will enter are completely different. When I was their age, there were no data scientists, no AI specialists, no drone operators, no content creators as full-time professions. Today's students are preparing for examinations while the global workplace is preparing for skills that go far beyond textbooks.

I told them what I learned through my own journey from SKUAST to civil services to Oxford and Harvard that future belongs not to those who know the most answers, but to those who can learn the fastest. Critical thinking, adaptability, communication, and creativity will matter more than any degree certificate. Our children in Jammu and Kashmir have a unique advantage that many don't realize. They come from a place of incredible complexity and resilience, which gives them perspective that cannot be taught in any classroom. The question is whether we are encouraging them to just memorize chapters or to ask uncomfortable questions, to not just follow paths but to create new ones. That shift from information to transformation is what these young minds need, and it starts with us believing they can compete with anyone, anywhere in the world.

Lastlt, I am deeply impressed by the Doom management for their outstanding efforts to prepare the children for future, in right direction. The Principal DIS and management are doing an amazing job. Outstanding performance by students.

Had a conversation with my seniors and colleagues who are very pessimistic about AI. That conversation led me to write this small piece.

Many believe AI will make people lazy. That it will kill thinking. That children will stop reasoning etc etc

Hmm ,not at all.

At first AI shows nothing. Learning feels slow.Results feel distant.Then suddenly output jumps.People call it overnight success.They nvr see the silent preparation.
