Today is a reminder, a painful one, that democracy is fragile. To preserve it requires people of good will, leaders with the courage to stand up, who are devoted not to pursuit of power and personal interest at any cost, but to the common good.
This is a moment of tremendous opportunity—to create jobs, meet the climate challenge, and enhance equity for all.
I'm honored that the President-elect has asked me to serve our nation as Secretary of Transportation.
Congratulations to @RonaldKlain, whose deep experience (and Hoosier roots) will serve him well as he leads the Biden White House team and helps our next president guide this country through the challenges ahead.
I extend my deep condolences to the loved ones of the peacekeepers, including 6 American service members, who died on Tiran Island, and wish a speedy recovery to the surviving American. I join all Americans in honoring their sacrifice, as I keep their loved ones in my prayers.
Trump deserved to be impeached and removed.
But, there is a bright side.
Because he wasn’t removed by the Senate, we got to vote and watch him get rejected by American voters.
And it feels awesome.
Today, we honor the service of those who have worn the uniform of the Armed Forces of the United States.
To our proud veterans—I will be a commander in chief who respects your sacrifice, understands your service, and will never betray the values you fought so bravely to defend.
If neither party has the votes to elect a speaker of the House, I’d be happy to serve as a nonpartisan speaker who ensures the institution works as it’s supposed to—a place where all ideas are welcome and where outcomes are discovered through the process, not dictated from above.
If someone you love and care about voted the other way, today might be a good day to reach out. Not to talk politics, but to talk about things that will remind them (and yourself) why you love and care about them.
All our preparation and work over these last months and years has brought us to this moment. We must push as never before and deliver the change America needs.
