Netflix built a machine that makes shows vanish from culture faster than it can produce new seasons.

The dropoffs are brutal. The Four Seasons lost 63% of its audience between seasons. Avatar: The Last Airbender lost 59%. Beef lost 58%.

Obvious suspect: the gap. Wednesday took 33 months to return. Squid Game took over 3 years. A kid who watched season 1 in middle school was in high school by season 2.

Here's what breaks that theory. HBO waits just as long and grows anyway. The Last of Us gained 600,000 viewers after two years off air. White Lotus grew 63% between seasons 1 and 2, then another 57% for season 3.

The difference is what happens during the wait. An HBO season lives for 8-10 weeks. Recaps every Monday. Theories all season. A finale that becomes an event. That memory compounds through the gap.

A Netflix season lives for one weekend. Binge Friday, discuss through Sunday, done. Then 33 months of silence with nothing anchoring the show in anyone's head.

So the gap punishes Netflix twice. Their waits run longer, and their shows grow shallower roots to survive them.

Third layer: Netflix's growth engine is new subscribers, so marketing dollars chase new titles. A returning season of a show your existing subscribers already liked acquires nobody.

Weekly release would fix the memory problem. Faster production would fix the gap. Netflix has resisted both for a decade because binge IS the brand.

The executives studying this problem built the machine causing it.
