Ziyarat Road in Kreeri Lies Incomplete, Residents Face Mounting Hardships

Authorities draw flak for inaction as officials fail to provide a satisfactory response to halted construction

KREERI, BARAMULLA, April 2: Residents of Kreeri and its adjoining areas in north Kashmir have expressed strong resentment over the incomplete construction of the Ziyarat road, accusing the Rural Development Department of neglecting a vital public project and leaving locals to suffer.
The road, which stretches from Kreeri Market to the revered shrine of Syed Haji Mohammad Murad Bukhari (RA), serves as a crucial link for more than 20 villages, connecting Kreeri to Babareshi and Tangmarg via areas such as Suchipora, Dolipora, Kawachak Sheikhpora, Khaipora Kakothal, Nambalnar and others. Locals say the road is currently in a dilapidated condition, riddled with potholes and posing serious risks to commuters.
Residents alleged that despite repeated appeals, the department has failed to address the worsening condition. “The authorities seem to be in deep slumber. The road is in a shabby state, and vehicles are getting damaged regularly. Children and elderly people are finding it difficult even to walk,” they said.
They stated that the road had previously suffered from severe waterlogging due to poor drainage. Following persistent demands, funds were eventually sanctioned and construction work, including the laying of drainage pipes, was initiated. However, the work was abruptly halted just before the holy month of Ramadan and has not resumed since.
As a result, the situation has deteriorated further, with water accumulating on the road, soil subsiding at multiple locations, and the entire stretch turning muddy and unsafe for both pedestrians and vehicles. Residents said the incomplete work has created serious inconvenience, particularly for patients, school-going children and emergency services.
The issue has gained urgency with the approaching Urs of Syed Haji Murad Bukhari (RA), an annual religious event that draws a large number of devotees from across the region. Locals fear that the current condition of the road may lead to severe inconvenience, traffic disruptions and potential safety hazards for visitors.
Adding to the concerns, residents claimed that the contractor had cited alleged threats from certain individuals as a reason for not resuming the work, raising questions over the smooth execution of public welfare projects in the area.
Meanwhile, residents of the Kreeri-Wagoora constituency have appealed to their MLA, Advocate Irfan Hafiz Lone, to intervene and ensure immediate resumption of the work. “We only see politicians during elections. Basic amenities like road connectivity remain neglected,” they said, urging the MLA to visit the area and assess the situation firsthand.
When contacted, Assistant Commissioner Development (ACD) Baramulla, Mudasir Choudhary, stated that he would verify the project's status and respond accordingly. Electricity, water, and roads are fundamental amenities essential for residents residing in remote areas, villages, towns, or cities. The provision of these services often depends on citizens' engagement in democratic processes, whereby they elect public representatives who are responsible for advocating for their needs and conveying these demands to the government for action. Many political leaders actively participate in initiatives aimed at improving public welfare; however, some neglect the genuine concerns of the people.

A pertinent example is the Tappar to Kreeri road, which connects to National Highway 44, a major arterial route critical for regional transport and commerce. Approximately 100 villages along this route including Kalantara , Sheikhpora , Kreeri have faced significant difficulties due to the deteriorated condition of this road. The once smooth asphalt has cracked and eroded over time, resulting in muddy, pothole-ridden surfaces that hinder daily travel and emergency services. We have not seen this kind of road deterioration for the past 15 years, and there has been little progress; the current public representative remains inactive in addressing this critical matter.

Similarly, the Ziyarat road in Kreeri, which serves as a vital link to religious and community centers, has remained incomplete for over a year. The ongoing construction work has stalled, leaving a dusty, uneven pathway that poses risks to travelers, especially during adverse weather conditions. Unfortunately, there has been a lack of proactive effort from officials to assist the affected communities, exacerbating their hardships.

I wish to clarify that I am not opposed to any political leader or individual. Rather, I am presenting an objective account of the situation. I urge readers to reflect on the past fifteen years and consider the state of infrastructure, specifically road connectivity, under different administrations. It is evident that certain constituencies in Jammu and Kashmir, such as Sangrama, have received development funds including road grants and infrastructural allocations that other constituencies have not in the past government I respectfully request former Minister @BashartBukhari @Basharat_Office to assist in alleviating these hardships. Furthermore, I would appreciate confirmation on whether he intends to raise this issue with higher authorities in the Government of India.
