Supervisor @DebbieLesko’s story is a powerful reminder: leaving abuse is possible, and there is hope.
The Board of Supervisors has adopted a proclamation designating October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month. 💜

Powerful story of my parents early days together. With everything happening around the world it can be easy to get discouraged but God is good all the time and all the time God is good.

Virginia has developed a brilliant model for getting to phone-free schools.
First, Gov. Youngkin issued a well-researched executive order laying out the destination and the justification:
https://t.co/AjnlGNuW3Z
Next, the VA DOE and the governor's wife, Suzanne Youngkin, set up an evening where she and I talked for an hour and it was viewable at hundreds of schools that chose to participate. At those schools, parents and teachers gathered in person to watch the talk for the first hour, and then talk among themselves for the second, about what they want to do. This is a great example of taking collective action at the state level, and then encouraging more of it at the local level.
Our talk is now available online so that any groups of parents and teachers can come together to watch it and then decide what they want to do in their own schools. It's not just about the phones. It's about restoring the play-based childhood. That means longer recess, and doing the Let Grow Experience. That means making school more playful, more engaging, better for learning and for fostering friendships. You can do it in your state (or country) too.
My thanks to First Lady Suzanne Youngkin, and to two state leaders who are driving the change: Secretary of Education Aimee Guidera, and Secretary of Health and Human Resources Janet Kelly. I'm so pleased to be working with you to improve education in a state where I lived for 17 beautiful years.

Do you want to shift your K-12 school away from phone-based and toward play-based childhood? Join me and @The_MainIdea for a discussion of how to do that
Happy World Elephant Day! While serving as CINCPAC in 1971, ADM John S. McCain Jr. was surprised to receive an elephant as a gift from the prime minister of Cambodia. The elephant had been captured from the Viet Cong who had used it to transport military supplies. Because the value of the gift exceeded $50, the "cincpachyderm" became the property (and logistical problem) of the U.S. government. Not wanting to insult Cambodia by declining the gift, the Pentagon formed McCain's Elephant Delivery Team (MEDT) to arrange for the one-ton animal to be flown to the Los Angeles Zoo by a USAF C-141 Starlifter.

Here is the most dramatic real-world test of The Anxious Generation yet done by any journalist. @DeccaJourno of @thetimes is the only journalist who got both halves of the book. She arranged for UK teens to give up their smartphones, as many others have done. But she did it for a month (not a week), and she did it with a GROUP of friends (not just a few random individuals), AND she added on a phone-free and adult-free camping trip. (I don't know how she got that past the lawyers; it could not have been done in the USA.)
The result was a joyous demonstration of what happens when a GROUP of friends opts out of the phone-based childhood, together, and what happens when adults give them the chance to do something adventurous, on their own. I just heard Decca's son (one of the participants) say, on a radio show, that the camping trip gave him "one of the best nights of my year, maybe of my life."
The essay offers complete vindication for @FreeRangeKids and @LetGrowOrg. It shows parents how they can restore a real-world childhood, IF they do it together, with a few other families. It offers a vivid illustration of our mission, at

Here's a link to the article. Thanks to @thetimes for making the essay available without a paywall, at least for those in the USA (I think).

Excited to be attending the State Policy Network 31st Annual meeting this week in Chicago.
Stop by and say Hi 👋👋 to the @ClassWallet team!

I've asked hundreds of people to recall their favorite teacher and what made them so impactful.
One response I've never heard before is "I've had so many amazing teachers I really can't pick just one."
I think that's sad, but I get it. Teaching is hard and our educational system makes it really hard to get your Miss Frizzle on.
Here are the three mental shifts I think we need to make around how we see the role of "teacher" and the neurological underpinnings of why these shifts are good for teachers and good for kids.

So proud of @GullyoftheSun! AZ has been so fortunate to have her advocating for its students and expanding opportunities for them. VA is lucky to get her next!
A world class professional and human being. Arizona is an incredible place to raise and educate a family and she deserves a ton of credit for a lot of it. Excited to see her bring experience to the commonwealth and join a dynamic team with @AimeeGuidera and @GovernorVA
Such exciting news for Virginia families! We’ve been so grateful to have had @GullyoftheSun leading the charge for kids in Arizona for the last decade. Her vision and leadership will truly be missed.
John Adams was invited to speak at the 50th Fourth of July celebration in Quincy. He was too old, too weak, to appear in person, and in fact would die that day, but offered one sentiment:
“Independence forever.”
Anything to add? he was asked.
“Not a word.”
