RUC B.S. Bio ‘21/Goal: PhD in #Neuroscience (#chronicpain & mental illness)/Escaping reality through science& art one discovery & doodle at a time/ #painpatient
Even if it’s “just” publishing papers using drosophila or rodent models I just can’t feel like this pain I’ve experienced all my life was for nothing. I have to turn it into something and this is the most tangible outlet my brain chose
Experiencing this debilitating migraine attack has made me that much more persistent go get my PhD in neuroscience to study pain neuro. We so desperately need more treatment options than just go to the hospital when you need a migraine cocktail & more thorough pain management
If there’s anything in my life that I have as a main “big goal” of accomplishing it’s obviously getting a PhD first but after that I just want to make some kinda of contribution however small to the current knowledge of pain neuroscience.
But bc of this 1 little error on the hospitals part, I’m now facing long term-debilitating consequences that are affecting my ability to not just live normally due to the light sensitivity. my mom has been driving me to work everyday for 2weeks bc I can’t drive like this
Was back in the ER today with the same migraine I’ve had going on two months now. Turns out they think it’s a persistent post concussive syndrome. And it does make sense. #migraine
I’m honestly annoyed at the reason for my concussion. I received it @ a hospital where I had been given medication for stomach pain and then was standing in line for an ultrasound, passed out face first and hit my head on the ground. All could’ve been avoided if I had been seated
Today I saw a new neurologist. 1 of the best I’ve ever seen (props to my girlfriend for finding him for me!). I was diagnosed as having Status migrainosus currently. Anyways he recommended that I read this book. Figured I’d share for any of my fellow migraine sufferers! #migraine
In academia it’s so easy to get lost in the culture of overworking yourself to meet impossible standards of productivity. So the individual lab environment can really make or break it for someone with chronic health issues #DisabledInSTEM
I’ve not been great health-wise. Last wed/thurs I was in the ER for heart issues and migraine. 3 migraine cocktails later and I still have one. It’s one of the longest migraines I’ve had and I’m getting frustrated with this intense pain. Lights and sounds feel like daggers.
Long story short- I’m so grateful to work in a lab that is so caring and thoughtful about my health. I get a lot of anxiety about how unpredictable my health can be especially when I’m new somewhere work-wise bc I want to be “reliable”and this place has been so kind & empathic
I saw something somewhere that said the best advice they ever got in academia was that we’re all smart, and to distinguish yourself by being kind. And that really stuck with me. #academia
@VRBoombatzMDPhD I have not but I am looking it up right now! I was hoping I’d get some comments like this pointing me in the right direction so Thankyou!
The more I think about what kind of neuroscience PhD program I want to apply to, the more I’m interested in finding one that offers lab/s that merge marine biology with neuroscience. #neuroscience#MarineBiology
When I tried to go in to the lab on Monday one of the post docs even helped me find a local urgent care and urged me to leave early instead of trying to tough it out. I feel guilty for missing so much work but health always comes first.
I currently have pneumonia. Since I have asthma & RA, it’s hitting me particularly hard. The lab I work for has been so supportive of me in taking the time to recover and I’m so grateful. Supportive workplaces are crucial especially for those with disabilities. #DisabledInSTEM
Coming from the south (Texas) women were often told to try minimizing “girly appearances” in the workplace if you want to be taken seriously. But nothing can be further from the truth. Never let anyone dull your sparkle ✨
There’s something so empowering about wearing super sparkly glitter/ hyper feminine makeup every day in the lab. Younger Sarah would have been thrilled to know that yes you can be girly and a scientist. #womeninscience
