Comparing the MLS media deal to the WNBA deal, you can see how much worse it gets for MLS.
The WNBA makes $200 million annually on their new deal, while MLS makes $250 million annually.
The first thing to note is that the WNBA only has 12 teams, whereas MLS has 30 clubs. This means each WNBA team is making $16.6 million a year, while MLS teams are making around $5-6 million annually due to production costs.
The second thing is publicity. The WNBA is featured on ESPN/ABC, which helps draw in more casual viewers, whereas MLS is stuck behind a paywall. Caitlin Clark has undoubtedly boosted the WNBA, but thereโs no bigger star in sports than Messi. He would generate insane ratings on ESPN, TNT, NBC, etc.
As I said the other day, this deal isnโt aging well. MLS needs a significant number of subscribers to the Season Pass in order to split revenue with Apple from new sign-ups. It seems MLS has hit its ceiling at around 2 million subscribers, which is the last figure we received. The only way to get more people to sign up is to improve the quality of play and bring in more big-name players. Still, it feels like an uphill battle with Apple, in my opinion.
Very kind of Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy to become government officials while remaining in their executive roles at companies that either do business with or have regulatory conflicts with the government.
Iโm disappointed in the lack of promotion from Apple when it comes to MLS. They havenโt done much to help the league grow or promote it.
The deal isnโt aging well either, especially when you consider the $250 million annually split among 30 teams. Itโs really only $140-150 million, as MLS has to cover its own production costs.
It just feels like MLS is a tenant renting a room from Appleโnothing more, nothing less. I expected them to do something innovative to attract new fans and build interest in the league. Imagine if Messi hadnโt come to MLS; this would be a huge disaster.
I watch all the games because I cover the league, but many casual fans tell me theyโve lost interest due to the lack of promotion. Even many MLS diehards donโt tune in as they used to.
@RpsAgainstTrump Senator-elect Ruben Gallego is the future of the Democratic Party. Hispanic, a Marine, border state, swing state, dynamic. Look for him to be center-stage over the next few years.
