@RutgersAltRoute A5: I explain to my elementary students that any formal assessment is just a way we can find out what we already know and what we need to practice more together. Takes the pressure off and makes it more community-oriented vs. individualized/competitive #AltRtEd#growthmindset
@RutgersAltRoute A4: I think the more specific, the better. In my Spanish classes I use “I love how you kept trying and didn’t give up until you got the pronunciation of that word correct” vs. just "Great pronunciation!" #AltRtEd#growthmindset
@RutgersAltRoute A3: Focusing on giving “process-praise” instead of “person-praise” e.g. “I see how you tried out different strategies on that problem until you got it - that’s great!” Instead of “Wow, you’re great at math!”
#AltRtEd#growthmindset
@RutgersAltRoute A2: I love using affirmations like these ones, putting posters up on my wall and praising students for being courageous enough to try their hardest even when they don’t get the answer right the first time #AltRtEd#growthmindset@KabbaniGSE @shadualz
@RutgersAltRoute A1: A challenge is there is no “quick fix” to mindset- developing growth-oriented mindset is a long, slow process that requires consistent nurturance + patience- you have to be in it for the long haul 🐢

@RutgersAltRoute Involving the community - calling in the adults + the kids as resources for one another, modeling conflict resolution + reconciliation. Involving parents as collaborators — #healing instead of shaming #AltRtEd#Standuptobullying
@GiRon60505115@RutgersAltRoute I know - I was skeptical at first about Hangouts since it's more screen time but I realize that educational screen time is a much different experience than social screen time. I led the "Rose, Bud, Thorn" exercise with them to ask about how their week went - they really liked it!
@alberti_mr@RutgersAltRoute I agree - it becomes tricky when resources are scarce. So grateful for the amazing counselor at my school! Another complication is that often times past trauma causes the HIB in the first place - vicious cycle ☹️
@GiRon60505115@RutgersAltRoute Our district just started a "Hangouts" program after school a couple days/wk- kids can just drop into your Zoom room and chat about whatever, really nice community building and social time to check in - I facilitate so the kids can ask each other questions about what they share
@GiRon60505115@RutgersAltRoute I agree! 👏 I have heard those things too ☹️ But those unmutes have interestingly has given me a heads up on which students need more emotional support too
@RutgersAltRoute A3: This year I joined the School Safety + Climate Committee- we address physical but also emotional safety + positive climate so that students can flourish no matter what their circumstances. I also communicate w/ the counselor if can tell a student needs extra support. #AltRtEd
