MYTH: Drainage is unnecessary.
FACT: Drainage is part of everyday life.
Homes rely on eavestroughs, weeping tile, sump pumps, and septic systems. Towns and cities rely on storm sewers, ditches, culverts, and road drainage. Gardens, yards, highways, cabins, and communities all depend on the safe movement of excess water.
Agriculture is no different.
Drainage is not about “getting rid of water.” It is about managing water so fields, roads, food production, homes and communities can function.
SaskFSA works to advance farmer-focused policies that support responsible drainage management, long-term productivity and practical solutions that work for farms, rural communities and environmental sustainability.
In Saskatchewan’s prairie pothole region, water management is critical. Drainage management improves field efficiency, yield and economics, along with enhanced soil health and environmental stewardship. Saskatchewan farmers are the front-line stewards of the land and water they manage every day.
Field Efficiency Drainage Research Project - a collaboration of industry leaders working together to improve field efficiency, agronomic stewardship & to better understand enviro co-benefits of managing AG water!
The 2026 season is underway! And it’s W E T here.

MYTH: Drainage is only about farmers getting rid of their water.
FACT: Water management is part of how Saskatchewan produces food.
Saskatchewan is home to 43% of Canada’s total cropland. Farmers host 4.6 million acres of wetlands in our province.
That means our province has a major responsibility when it comes to food production, rural infrastructure, climate resilience, and responsible land stewardship.
Farmers cannot control the weather, but they can use drainage, irrigation, water storage, soil health practices, and good drainage design to manage water more responsibly.

Five priorities. $3.5 billion. Five years.
The Sustainable CAP set the foundation, but Saskatchewan producers know there's more work to do.
The Agriculture Policy Framework Summit on March 25 is where we start building what comes next.
Stay tuned! 💚
