I have heart surgery coming up next week and now understand why I’ve been so physically exhausted and out-of-sorts these past few months. The docs tell me my condition is called “atrial functional tricuspid regurgitation” and that it is “mainly due to long standing atrial fibrillation… The tricuspid valve is leaking severely, causing a back pressure on all the internal organs and a high jugular venous pressure.” The procedure aims to get this old body back on the road again quickly and efficiently. It is VERY LOW RISK but of course I’m grateful for any good wishes sent my way. I’m in the midst of writing a new book, the best work I’ve ever done, and I’m not going to let this stop me! I said yes to the linked podcast now, rather than after my procedure, for reasons that I explain during the interview:

Lakers Modernize Starting Lineup!
Add Dort & Turner But Save Picks
With a pair of savvy opportunistic moves to help the Thunder and Bucks clean their cap sheets, the Lakers could upgrade both their starting small forward and center positions without having to spend any draft capital.
The OKC Thunder are looking to avoid the second apron and massive luxury taxes as several player extensions kick in next season, which means finding an NBA team to dump Lu Dort and his $18M expiring contract. The Lakers could offer to absorb Lu’s $18M salary in their cap space in return for the Nuggets giving the Lakers their #17 pick in the draft for the LA’s #25, which would give the Lakers better odds to draft Henri Veesaar.
The Bucks want to dump Myles Turner and his 3-years and $84M contract while the Lakers would like to move Vanderbilt, Knecht, and LaRavia and their $41M for a modern center to space the floor and protect the rim. The Lakers could offer to trade Vanderbilt, Knecht, and LaRavia straight up for Turner, which would save the rebuilding Bucks over $40M and allow the win-now Lakers to get a quality modern center without giving up any picks.
With $60M in cap space for other team free agents, the Lakers should also sign Robert Williams ($15M) as backup center, Keon Ellis ($10M) as backup small forward, and Jonathan Isaac ($5M) as backup power forward. That would give the Lakers a deep and diverse 12-man rotation for next season that including with 5 new defense-first rotation players plus all 7 rotation players from last year’s 8-man rotation except for Deandre Ayton.
LAKERS 12-MAN ROTATION:
PG: Luka Doncic, Marcus Smart
SG: Austin Reaves, Luke Kennard
SF: Luguentz Dort, Keon Ellis
PF: LeBron James, Rui Hachimura, Jonathan Isaac
CE: Myles Turner, Robert Williams III, Jaxson Hayes
The Lakers expanded 12-man rotation now includes 6 defense-first players in Smart, Dort, Ellis, Turner, Williams, and Isaac plus 6 elite level offensive players in Doncic, Reaves, James, Hachimura, Kennard, and Hayes. Significantly, the Lakers will also still have sufficient tradable draft capital via 2 first round picks (2031 & 2033), 3 first round swaps (2028, 2030, and 2032), and 2 second round picks ( 2032 and 2033) to trade for a superstar.
The smartest move the Lakers could make this summer would be to take advantage of opportunities to help OKC and Denver with their cap issues by trading for Lu Dort and Myles Turner while still saving future draft picks.

@traveler_jeff@CrisReed Why would you only stay for a year? In STRD for example. Seems like a multi year hold. Cap appreciation potential upside but can’t discount that 13% ROC yield. Seems perfect for a younger retiree who still wants some growth but needs that tax shielded account.

@LorenHodl@JoeCarlasare is here, hope we can have all voices on this space like the good old days. Glad @dotkrueger is back on from time to time. At the end of the day we all bleed orange….
My fellow millennials: you're doing everything right.
The degree. The job. Saving what you can.
And yet the math doesn't work. The gap keeps widening.
And somehow you keep blaming yourself.
You shouldn't👇
