Messi was a liability last night. I am not remotely surprised about that. Argentina's strategy was to defend structurally and press as a unit, and it almost got them to penalties against Spain, although Enzo's sending off made that much more difficult. But there was one special player who didn't defend as part of that structure at all. Because Argentina barely had the ball, Messi was invisible. While everyone else was working towards the shared objective of surviving long enough to reach penalties, Messi was somehow above that despite providing virtually no value in any area of the game.
