💠"President Trump’s suggestion that the U.S. should charge “security fees” for passage through the Strait of Hormuz ranks among the most damaging errors of his presidency. The statement directly contradicts earlier positions taken by both Trump himself and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, as well as long-standing U.S. policy. Worse, it handed the IRGC a ready-made justification to impose its own levies while simultaneously alienating key Gulf allies whose cooperation is essential for regional stability.

It seems the remark reflects Trump’s long-held personal views dating back to the 1980s rather than the official position of his administration. White House aides will likely try to contain the fallout by reframing the idea as nothing more than “temporary costs” for providing naval escorts, essentially replicating the model the U.S. used during the Iran-Iraq Tanker War in the late 1980s."
