Installed FB app because I was looking for something in the marketplace. Suddenly found myself wasting way too much time scrolling social feed instead and getting depressed. FB is 99% negative news and posts. Ended up deleting the app within 12 hours.
This is Rajshai university today where students sought to hold a peaceful rally. However the #Bangladesh law enforcement authorities were having none of that. At one point, armed and plain clothes police tried to disrupt the protests, arrest five students and drag them to their vehicles. But what this extraordinary video shows is how the police have lost their authority, and how the teachers and students are not now willing to put up with these arbitrary arrests and, quite fearlessly manage to grab their fellow student back from the police. ... As I have mentioned in earlier tweets, it feels like something has changed in the country, but what is not so clear is how widespread that change is.
Senior photojournalist Shamim Ahmed of the Daily Jugantor was subjected to a baton charge by Police Deputy Commissioner (DC) Tanvir Arafat and Sub-Inspector (SI) Shahidul Islam in Barishal district, Bangladesh. Shamim was covering a large demonstration by Students Against Discrimination (SAD) on Fazlul Haque Avenue in Barishal town.
Such police brutality against journalists is unacceptable and must be stopped.

Having written a First Information Report that blamed #Bangladesh opposition parties for the death of the student Abu Sayeed in Rangpur, when videos showed extremely clearly that he was killed by police shooting (see tweet below), I did not think it was possible for the Bangladesh police and authorities to be any more delinquent and nefarious in this investigation. But they somehow managed it. They actually arrested a 16 year old school boy and detained him for 9 days in relation to this case, apparently accusing him of involvement in the killing. It defies belief. He thankfully got bail today.
This is simply not a system that can get anywhere close to conducting a fair or independent investigation into these killings. It is totally biased and partisan.

BANGLADESH 🇧🇩 : The Government must immediately overturn the curfew with a ‘shoot on sight’ order that grants excessive powers to the security forces.
The curfew must be urgently lifted, and all the people detained or arrested solely for exercising their right to protest peacefully should be immediately and unconditionally released.
The authorities are obligated under international law to always exercise restraint and use no more force than is strictly necessary, proportionate and lawful in response to any escalation they may face. #SaveBangaldeshiStudents #ProtectTheProtest
BREAKING: Bangladesh has imposed a CURFEW and has deployed the ARMY to control ongoing protests against PM Hasina's authoritarian rule.
The death toll since Monday has climbed to at least 105.
Stay tuned.
I’m deeply concerned by the ongoing violence in Bangladesh.
The ongoing loss of life – including attacks on student protesters – is troubling and unacceptable.
Democratic freedoms and the rule of law are essential and must be respected.
