The Stratospheric Ballooning Association (SBA) has been monitoring recent events involving high-altitude balloons over United States airspace. Hundreds, if not thousands, of high-altitude balloons are flown safely every day for the purpose of meteorological, scientific, and educational purposes. These types of balloons provide atmospheric data that is critical for weather predictions and atmospheric science studies. They also are used to fly a wide variety of other science and technology payloads into the stratosphere. High-altitude balloons provide an affordable and inspiring tool for students to learn and become excited about STEM activities by flying student-built payloads into the near-space environment.
We remind all SBA members and those actively doing safe, high-altitude ballooning to please exercise caution, always employing best practices, including working closely with your local FAA office.
I was visiting with some of the schools participating in the National Eclipse Ballooning Project led by Montana Space Grant. Below is St. Catherine University launching one of the scientific payloads.
The first day of AHAC concluded with some great discussions on the upcoming eclipse flights. Today’s conference kicks off with a balloon flight at 8:45.

Due to COVID-19, the SBA had to move the annual (AHAC) to a different date and we have now moved it as a virtual conference. The conference will now be on Sept 19th, and will be free to participants. Additional information can be found on our website.
