Case Update: Truck Driver Sentenced in Fatal Vehicular Manslaughter Incident
Jashanpreet Singh plead guilty and was convicted of 3 counts of Vehicular Manslaughter with Gross Negligence.
The court imposed a sentence of 4 years and 8 months in state prison.
Under California’s statutory framework, several factors required our prosecutors and the court to consider imposing the lower term.
These included:
• the defendant was not intoxicated by any detectable substance at the time of the collision,
• the defendant had no prior criminal history, and
• the defendant qualified under the youthful offender provision of Penal Code 1170(b) (6) (B), which directs courts to consider the low term for offenders 26 years old or younger at the time of the ottense.
• there are no statutorily prescribed aggravating factors under Penal Code 1170(b) (2) that would allow deviation from the presumptive low term.
Our Office recognizes this outcome is disproportionate given the immense loss suffered, families who may never feel whole again, and the significant impact on the motorists who witnessed the tragedy and were impacted by the freeway closure that followed the collision. This incident unfortunately highlights how devastating grossly negligent driving can be for everyone on our roadways as well as the limitations of our current laws regarding vehicular manslaughter.
Today, we honor and remember those who gave their lives in service to our great nation. Their courage, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment to protecting our freedoms will never be forgotten.
The San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office stands in gratitude as we reflect on the heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice.
🇺🇸We remember them today and every day.

The San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office announces recent developments in the prosecution of Woravit Mektrakarn, charged with PC 187(a) – Murder, in connection with the disappearance and presumed death of one of his employees nearly three decades ago.
The victim, Luis Garcia, who worked for Mektrakarn at his Ontario, CA noodle business, was last seen on November 23, 1996, when he was believed to have met Mektrakarn to receive a final payment in a financial agreement.
Luis Garcia was never seen again.
Mektrakarn fled the United States shortly after the crime and lived under a falsified identity between Burma and Cambodia for nearly 30 years. In April 2024, he was apprehended under an alias and in disguise by the Royal Thai Police in Bangkok at the request of the United States. The U.S. Department of Justice’s Office of International Affairs and U.S. Embassy Bangkok worked with Thai authorities to secure his arrest and extradition.
On January 16, 2026, Mektrakarn was extradited to the United States and escorted to San Bernardino by the U.S. Marshals Service.
“This case demonstrates our unwavering commitment to pursuing justice, no matter how much time has passed,” said District Attorney Jason Anderson. “It also stands as a testament to the extraordinary efforts and partnerships of law enforcement agencies across the globe, whose dedication made this outcome possible.”

San Bernardino County District Attorney Jason Anderson announced today that Verizon Wireless will pay $7.7 million to resolve a statewide civil enforcement action involving environmental violations at hundreds of the company’s wireless telecommunication cell towers across Southern California.
“Verizon’s failure to comply with law that govern hazardous materials created avoidable risks,” said District Attorney Anderson. “The investigation found consistent gaps in required reporting, employee training, and inspection access across hundreds of facilities. This judgment ensures accountability while strengthening transparency for first responders at thousands of cell towers and requires that Verizon maintain compliance going forward.”
The case was filed in Orange County Superior Court by the Orange County District Attorney’s Office and brought by the District Attorneys of Ventura, Los Angeles, Imperial, Riverside, San Bernardino, and San Diego counties along with the Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office.

Our Office joins in thanking San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors in prioritizing child victims in San Bernardino County. With this investment, children can continue to receive the trauma informed care and healing that RICA provides.
Each year, tens of thousands of children are reported to San Bernardino County as possible victims of abuse or neglect. At Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital, a specialized medical team has become one of the most influential forces in identifying abuse, protecting young victims, and guiding families toward long-term healing. 🛡️
Now, with a $7.5 million investment from the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors, the team is preparing to expand its reach even further. 🤝
“With San Bernardino County’s population on the rise and more families seeking support, we must ensure our child protection resources grow as well,” said Board of Supervisors Chairman and Third District Supervisor Dawn Rowe. “Expanding the RICA team means we’re ready to respond to the increased need and heightened awareness around child abuse.”
