I’m so not into policing the way student’s come to class. Wanna attend from your bed? Cool. In your car in the Target parking lot? Great. Wrapped up in a Sesame Street comforter? Stay warm.
Listen I’m just happy you showed up.
Hey teachers! 👋🏾 Friendly reminder that your Black, Brown and students of color don’t need you as a savior to save them. This is a harmful train of thought and is rooted in racism. Equity isn’t swooping in and trying to rescue students. Equity is interrupting systemic racism.
White people’s quest for total dominance goes far beyond niceness. They have a system that enabled and affirms their acts of dominance. We do our kids a disservice by keeping racism interpersonal.
I want my students to move from talking about race as "disrespect" towards Black people, to discussing how white people have created a system that prioritizes them and their culture why attempting to erase and murder others.
Treating each other w/ respect doesn't go far enough.
So much of history has been whitewashed for the sake of making it palatable for white consumption that we are starting to perpetuate things that are not only misconceptions, but outright lies.
A lot of what you're told about protests, MLK, etc. is wrong.
A thread.
BPOC have been denied the ability to obtain an education for hundreds of years. Today BPOC jump hurdles and and are denied the opportunity to access paths throughout middle and highschool that will lead them to college. Are YOU as an educator one of those hurdles? CLEAR THE PATH
I have privilege as white passing.
I have privilege as a Puerto Rican.
I have privilege as a Latinx person. With all that privilege things like this can easily still happen to me.
I’m obligated to use my privilege to uplift black people, black literature, black art, be anti racist, buy from black entrepreneurs and listen to and acknowledge black people because I will never experience oppression because of the color of my skin.
