The new PrEP injection that protects people from HIV for six months is good, but I think people still need to use condoms and be extra careful. There are other deadly STIs (e.g. HPV, gonorrhea and chlamydia) that cause serious long-term health issues (cancer, infertility, etc.).

A few years ago, I was at MUST when a young lady approached me and asked to take a photo with me. She was Miss Culture and introduced herself as “Ireen.” Since we had taken photos on my phone and I was supposed to send them to her later, I took her number and saved it as “Ireen Miss Culture.” It is still saved that way in my phone today. A few months later, or perhaps a year later, she messaged me through Facebook, saying she had lost my number. She asked me to post her on my Facebook page to help people vote for her in a pageant. Unfortunately, I did not because another contestant had made a similar request, and I did not want to appear biased. Our paths crossed again last year during Miss Malawi. As a board member, I was not very involved with the participants and only realised she was competing during the preliminaries held at Amaryllis in October. She and I never stayed in touch, so I could not have known about her participation through her either. Ireen saw me there, came over to say hello, we exchanged brief pleasantries, and I wished her well. The next thing I saw was that she had been crowned First Princess. I did not attend the finals. Personally, I was not surprised. I was happy that Thandie won because she was the one I was rooting for, but Ireen was clearly one of the strongest contestants. I did not know Ireen Navitcha was the daughter of the Minister until the preliminaries, when I met the Minister. In fact, when I first met her, her mother was not in government, and she was just like any other young woman pursuing her dreams. Even then, it was obvious how passionate she was about pageantry. When she joined Miss Malawi, her mother was still not in government. Why am I sharing this? Because we should take nothing away from Ireen. I have seen the unfortunate and unfair comments directed at her. In my opinion, she genuinely loves pageantry, she is passionate about it, and she is very good at it. I am no longer part of Miss Malawi this year, so I cannot speak about this year’s competition. However, I can confidently say that during our time, the process was fair and free. I do not know whether the claims that she has been favoured because her mother is now a Minister are true or not. What I do know is that Ireen has lived and breathed pageantry for years. She was always regarded as a strong Miss Malawi contender, and she is both beautiful and passionate. So as you discuss the matter of her eligibility for Miss world which I think is an okay debate to be had, take nothing from away Ireen!
