After 12 weeks of meeting online, last night I got to meet my #GOVT510 graduate students in-person @ScharSchool suite in Arlington — a pleasure to meet you all.
It was a terrific evening: students presented their term research to their peers, we discussed their findings and the broader issues they tackled, and we even got a live update on the redistricting election results from @ChazNuttycombe — thank you Chaz.
And yes — professor’s privilege meant I supplied the upscale #pizza. 🍕
#Online #education is invaluable. It expands access for working professionals who otherwise might not be able to continue their education, and it opens doors for students from different income levels, geographies, and underserved communities.
But gathering in person still matters. Even once or twice a semester, adding that element to an online program strengthens connection, deepens discussion, and builds the kind of academic community that makes learning more meaningful.

I truly enjoy graduation 🎓 season.
Today, I had the pleasure of serving as Marshal for the Master of Public Policy students at the Schar School’s Degree Celebration. There is something genuinely inspiring about watching students reach this milestone after years of hard work, sacrifice, late nights, and perseverance.
And as a professor, one of the best parts is seeing several of my own students walk across that stage in their caps and gowns — ready for the next chapter of leadership, public service, and impact.
It was also especially meaningful to have fellow immigrant, fellow Mason alumnus, my friend Senator @SalimForVA, deliver the keynote address — an excellent reminder to our graduates of the impact Mason alumni are making in public service and leadership.
Congratulations 👏 to the Class of 2026. The future is in good hands.
Footnote: yes, for the occasion I replaced my Vanderbilt doctoral tam (hat) with a Mason cap. I’m a rebel — what can I say😄?
