The Schmidt Center welcomes Forest Heights ES on campus. Today is a beautiful day to start the 5th grade residential trip for SY 22-23. Environmental literacy and outdoor learning at its best!
The Schmidt Center held it’s annual clean up today. Over 50 individuals helped revitalize a rain garden, clear over growth in our no mow zone, and plant trees and shrubs around campus. What a beautiful day with great students.
On Monday over 40 principals from China visited the Schmidt Center to learn about Environmental Literacy in PGCPS. The day included presentations from Gwynn Park HS students, Curriculum & Instruction staff, the Recycling Office, and an authentic experience at Patuxent River Park.
Spanish Immersion schools Cesar Chavez, Overlook, and Phyllis E. Williams were on campus today strengthening their culture of collaboration, trust, and kindness through team building exercises and classroom breakout sessions. What a great group of teachers and administrators!
Last week the Schmidt Center and the Special Programs Division of M-NCPPC hosted Teen Adventure Camp. Students explored the Center's forests, kayaked the Anacostia River, visited the recycling center, created a mural, and made a short PSA litter hip hop song. What a great week!

The Schmidt Center and Keep Prince George’s County Beautiful partner for a day of professional development at Patuxent River Park with PGCPS teachers. The day includes time on the river learning about the ecological value to wildlife in the region and a service learning action.
In an effort to remain environmentally conscious, we’ve enlisted 1,000 worms with our HOTFROG composter to break down our daily scraps (one of the many steps we’re taking to reduce our waste in the office). We’re excited to use BSD compost for plantings on our balconies!

Students from Takefu Senior High School in Japan visit Prince George's Co. and the Schmidt Center. Over three days they will work as a team outdoors, measure mussels from the Anacostia River, access water quality on the Potomac River, and spend time at Eleanor Roosevelt HS.
Today the Treating & Teaching program began it’s fourth year with a new cohort of teachers and building supervisors. The Schmidt Center, AWS, Bradley Site Design, MAEOE, and other partners shared instructional resources and strategies for stormwater management on school grounds.
Students from Central H.S. and exchange students from France spent two days exploring Prince George's Co. along the Anacostia River and in the woods of Brandywine. This cultural exchange included kayaking, ropes course challenges, a campfire, and other environmental programming.
On a wet and cold Saturday twenty PGCPS students volunteered at the Schmidt Center by restoring a native garden, refurbishing a compost area, planting trees, and moving firewood. Service learning hours were earned by all but a sense of pride and accomplishment rang true as well.
