Germany 🇩🇪 to reduce Vat rate for Restaurants to 7%

The new German coalition government cabinet of the CDU and SDP has on 30 July 2025 approved its draft budget, including that it will bring back the 7% reduced VAT rate for food sales by hospitality businesses. The effective date will be 1 January 2026.  

This was last in place until 1 January 2024 as a COVID-relief from 2020 to help restaurants and cafes during the pandemic.

Every trade association across Europe has prioritised a vat reduction for Restaurants and Food Service as their number one priority.

The Department of Finance have long stated that the reinstatement of the 9% VAT rate would cost €545 million and NOT €1 billion.

From 2011 to 2014 31,500 jobs were created within the hospitality sector majorly due to the 9% VAT rate.

The reinstatement of 9% as promised in the Programme for Government will save jobs, businesses and communities across the country.

In just the first three months of 2025, 150 food-led businesses closed their doors — a stark sign of a growing crisis and the urgent need for meaningful support.
