Preliminary operations for the invasion of Leyte began at dawn on October 17, 1944. The green 6th Ranger Battalion landed on Dinagat and Suluan islands off Leyte's eastern coast to set up navigation lights for the main invasion three days later.
Dinagat was unoccupied. On Suluan, the Rangers dispatched several Japanese defenders and captured a lighthouse with almost no casualties. A third island, Homonhon, was taken without opposition the next day.

Arthur Simons's assignment was as Executive Officer of the 98th Field Artillery Battalion & then of the 6th Ranger Infantry Battalion in the Pacific from August to October 1944, followed by service as Commander of Company B, 6th Ranger Battalion, from Oct. 1944 to February 1945.

The 1944 Suluan Raid cleared the path for the return of the U.S. Army to the Philippines, and it eliminated any interference with the U.S. plan to liberate the country.
