Scientists observed microscopic structures called melanosomes, the stuff inside cells responsible for the pigment called melanin. The duckbill platypus, for some reason, has hollow, spherical melansomes, which were previously known to only exist in birds!
Why does this animal have this biological feature?
No one knows quite yet, but a guess is that it’s a leftover trait from an ancient ancestor.
Our next Laser Show is some “24K Magic” in The Dome!
The setlist includes:
▫️Versace on the Floor

The Spotted Lanternfly (SLF) is now established in over 2/3 of Virginia’s counties. Luckily, researchers are working hard to uncover additional controls and tracking mechanisms:
-A study of bat guano revealed that 2 bats native to Virginia, Big Brown Bats & Eastern Red Bats, have been eating SLF. Testing bat guano to detect the insect’s DNA can reveal where the species spreads and which bats are eating them!
-Birds have been shown to consume SLF collected on trees other than the primary host, tree-of-heaven (which gives the insect a bitter taste). This is a great sign that removing these invasive trees may increase predation of the pest.
We’re making a mess for our next Science After Dark, and guests of all ages are welcome to join us as we make science bubble, erupt, splatter and more.

September 9 is America's most common birthday. 🎂 As folks get another year older, let’s be real: your age is your age, but how you feel is a whole different thing. If you think your daily habits disappear into the past, a major 30-year study suggests your body may be keeping the receipts!
A recent study shows that while the effects of risky behaviors like smoking and heavy drinking show up already at age 36, you have the power to change your health well into your 60’s. The message of the study is not that one imperfect weekend ruins your future—it is that reducing harmful habits during adulthood can keep them from quietly compounding for the next several decades.
So go ahead, have that second glass of celebratory champagne! 🥂
This nearly 100-year-old car used our EV chargers! The 1931 Ford Model A is a fully electric vehicle, and we can’t help but see ourselves in its skillful reuse. A vintage exterior filled with contemporary examples of science and technology? Sounds familiar!
Camouflage is predator avoidance 101! This amazing adaptation helps some overlooked species not only survive, but thrive in a world full of fast animals at the top of the food chain.
