This is a great example of why people are confused. ISOs are not shares of stocks nor are they money. ISOs are incentive stock options. First you have to have a clear understanding of what that is before it makes sense. If you don't know what they are then we're back to square one where the argument is being made that ther is money from a point of misinformation.
I'm just trying to clarify that the OP stated "the money is there"...and that's incorrect. It's actually the complete opposite, "there is no money there". Not only is the money not there, but ISOs are typically "vest" over multiple years, and they are not even considered actual shares of stocks, you don't own them, and the process of selling them are restricted by several factors including the contractual agreement. If its a private company its even more convoluted and restricted. If its a public company you could potentially sell them once they're vested and if the contract allows you to sell them without you purchasing them first. If they do allow cashless exercises not only do you incur the cost to purchase your ISOs but also the 41% federal tax (short term capital gains tax and NIIT tax, and in many states like CA you incur an additional 10% tax). So, unfortunately when people write posts like this they're either misinformed or are willfully misinforming the readers.
Its so disheartening to see the lack of understanding that almost no "billionaires" actually have billions in cash just laying around. The lack of understanding leads to misinformation which people argue over. The arguments are flawed from the second they're spoken. Makes me sad we can't engage in a coherent exchange due to this fundamental misunderstanding. Because there is an actual discussion that could take place that might lead to real ways in which those needs of society could be addressed.
@PebMet1@Td7653@elonmusk There's a difference between owning a company and having cash....and I've never once thought money was something to praise, the goals and milestones though, ya I'm all in.
117 billion people have inhabited this planet.
98% of them never saw a single invention in their lifetime.

@ONeilBox@WSJ I hear ya, but I don't know that spending decades to build your equity in a company is "overnight". Most have been managing the taxes and exercises of ISOs for a long long while.
@altcap Didn't he just say the opposite....? "This initiative could allow ordinary citizens to become direct equity partners in major technology firms"
Could always join the military and get paid almost nothing, live in the barracks which means you have roommates. When I say roommates it's atleast 2 to a room sometimes 3. Then after a couple of years you could get paid just enough to live off base with roommates. For context this was early 2000s...
