Once again the same excuses and diversions are being made for not dealing with the issue of Islamic extremist radicalisation in Australia. This is not about blame for December 14 - that is a straw man argument - but an honest appeal for what is needed to prevent such radicalisation in the future.

Hollow appeals for unity mean nothing if they are used as an excuse for not confronting or acting on how radicalisation is occurring in Australia.

This is as true of extremist Islam as it is for all other forms of political radicalisation, whether on the right or left, which is also present in Australia. We must stop avoiding the issue and work productively and honestly to address this issue for the sake of all faiths to make a positive and peaceful contribution. If not now after December 14, then when!

My calls for self regulation of the Islamic faith in Australia is requiring nothing more of Islamic religious leaders than any other faiths in Australia. I am asking for Islamic leaders to regulate and provide stronger protections against radicalisation within the Islamic faith community for the benefits of their own community and our wider Australian society. As I said in the speech, if there similar weaknesses in other faiths, including my own, the same requirements should apply.

Congratulations Greg Moriarty on your appointment as Australia’s Ambassador designate to the United States.

Having worked with Mr Moriarty in many roles from his time as Ambassador to Indonesia when we were implementing Operation Sovereign Borders through to the conception and establishment of AUKUS in his current role as Secretary of Defence, he has consistently demonstrated the highest standards of professionalism, dedication and integrity in the service and love of his country.

Mr Moriarty is highly regarded in the United States and will do an outstanding job. I commend the Albanese Government on his selection for appointment .
