“The Forgotten American Who Freed 452 People — and Paid the Price”

In 1749, 21-year-old Robert Carter III inherited thousands of acres and more than 100 enslaved people in Virginia. His grandfather, “King” Carter, had owned over a thousand and helped entrench slavery in the colony. By the 1790s, Robert controlled sixteen plantations and 452 people—one of the richest men in America.

Then faith changed everything.

On September 6, 1778, he was baptized in Totuskey Creek and left the elite Anglican church for the Baptists. Later he studied Swedenborg. By 1788 he wrote that defending slavery showed “great depravity.”

On September 5, 1791, he filed the Deed of Gift in Northumberland County court. It named all 452 people and set a legal, age-based schedule to free every one of them. Virginia law required gradual emancipation. Carter paid for their court transport and freedom papers. He leased land on his own estates to many of the newly free—turning away white renters to do it.

His family was outraged. In 1793 he left Virginia for Baltimore, placing the remaining process in the hands of Baptist minister Benjamin Dawson so the plan would survive. After Carter’s death in 1804, his heirs sued to stop the manumissions. They lost. In 1808 the Virginia Court of Appeals upheld the Deed.

By the end, more than 500—some accounts say nearly 600—people walked free. It remains the largest private emancipation by one individual before the Civil War.

Carter surrendered standing, family, and fortune. He was buried in an unmarked grave. Almost no one remembers his name.
