Jesus's First Miracle 🤝 Song of Solomon:
When Jesus turned water into wine at the wedding in Cana, he was doing more than helping out a party that had run dry.
The wine was the groom's responsibility.
The groom failed.
So, when Jesus provides an abundance of wine (roughly 1,000 bottles worth), he did help this groom, and...
Jesus "manifested his glory. And his disciples believed in him" (John 2:11).
What glory?
What did they believe?
A unique message was being revealed and fulfilled:
Jesus is the true Bridegroom, Messiah, Savior of God's people.
Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and Hosea all prophesied and revealed God as the Husband and Covenant Lover of his people.
And the Song of Songs—a book of prophetic poetry about the Messianic Bridegroom—fits right next to these books.
The better son of David, who is a shepherd and a king in Jerusalem, will bring his bride to a garden in Jerusalem where they will enjoy milk and honey.
This is why John the Baptist says about Jesus, "I'm the groom's friend, and rejoice greatly at the groom's voice" (John 3:29).
Cana revealed the glory of the Groom.
The disciples believed he is the Groom.
The Song, like the Prophets, portrays the love and cherishing of the Groom to his Bride (Eph 5:29).
@jt_english JT - Thanks for your training on these things! Close to 20% of the adults in our church are regularly involved in deep discipleship training at a high level of active learning. Currently, the focus is on Systematic Theology & Church History. People are hungry to mature!
@BowersWilkins Hello! I purchased a new pair of Pi8’s from your website a few weeks ago. The sound is amazing, BUT I am having skin issues (an allergic reaction) to the tips. Do you know where I can find foam tips instead? I don’t want to send these back unless I have to. Thanks!
@FreebirdHC I woke up this morning to see an order coming from Freebird. I tried your product at Christmas. NOT A FOT FOR ME!! How do I stop an order that I did not make? This is crazy!!
Today my new book ‘Love Your Church’ releases! Small group kit also available. Explore with a small group, membership class or book club what the church is, why being part of it is a glorious privilege, and why it’s worthy of our joyful commitment. https://t.co/x0AeoPtfW3
My parents both turned 70 this year. They celebrated their 50th anniversary. They also sold their house and moved to a new place to help my brother and his family plant a church. You don’t retire from the mission.
The Bible is more communal than individual.
Jesus teaches us to pray "Our Father" not "My Father"
Paul uses the phrase, "our Lord" 53 times, & "my Lord" only 1 time.
"Jesus is my personal savior" is not found in Holy Scripture.
We are the people of God
We belong to each other
Q: What is the chief end of man?
A: Man's chief end is to glorify God & to enjoy him forever.
Q: Does this include the craziest year ever?
A: Yes. This includes 2020!
Pastors, our attempts at a hybrid "biblical but self-help and entertaining" style of preaching has not produced disciples who choose conviction over comfort.
I have never been more convinced that we need to preach the Bible with rigor and without restraint.
Until pastors discover and embrace their identity in Christ -- which is accomplished by Christ and received by faith, not works -- they will keep trying to find their identity in their position, their preaching, their persona, and their programs. https://t.co/BJkGC96Uoj
One even regular church attenders sometimes say things and act in ways “out of step with the gospel” is that they do not see church as a catechizing community, the very context for identity and formation but simply as a resource center for their compartmentalized “religious self”
Grimké: The function of the pulpit is not to entertain, to amuse, to satisfy an idle curiosity: it is to instruct, to inspire ... to keep ever before people the one supreme figure in history, the Lord Jesus Christ, & to beget within them a passion for him, & for a Christly life.
