The driving force behind everything I advocate for is the deep unfairness and inequity I feel about the way I was able to experience childhood compared to how we treat young people in my adopted city. Whether it’s educational experience gaps or public safety- that’s my mission.
@tomsherwood@maustermuhle Tom- we’re not talking about airing on conservative vs optimistic. Yes, airing on the side of conservative is wise for a CFO. I do the same for my orgs budgeting. This is being off my hundreds of millions- regularly. And it’s a political choice. Most Council Members agree.
This isn’t good and not good. It’s good and opinion. The CFO has consistently been off by hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue every year because he inserts his conservative economic politics into his job rather than producing an honest estimate- which constrains council.
Good and not-good economic news for D.C. today from the city's CFO.
Good: The September revenue estimate says the city will close out the 2026 fiscal year with $205 million more revenue than expected.
Not good: Revenue projections for next four years are down.
Somewhat interesting claim from a supporter of Ward 8 Council member Trayon White that the $35,000 he accepted was merely a gift and that people don't have the right to ask about it.
D.C. ethics law is pretty clear on gifts, especially from people who have city contracts.
Watching this post-interview about regrets that she and her daughter have about what is being said about the piece emphasizes my point-there's a cost to putting one story at the center of everything, especially with a teen who is still changing her views.

It's a predictable outcome for a teenager to resent the decisions their parent has made about their life. It's a right of passage, even
One privileged teen's desire for advantages most Black youth are denied is not evidence that the movement to integrate NYC schools is misguided
This is absolutely insane. I can’t begin to explain the corrosive effects this will have in so many ways- to start with- with student engagement and attendance all the way down through the system.
Trump is banning students majoring in degrees that don’t make enough money from taking out college loans. Degrees for social work, art, religious studies, teaching aides, and music will be hit the hardest. https://t.co/6tV30STfyc
JUST IN: CVS locations in Washington, D.C. are reportedly no longer locking anti-theft merchandise cases, as the city experiences a drastic decline in crime.
Perhaps more importantly: this has provoked a good conversation BUT let's not take any one person's story as a substitute for the thousands of stories, research and moral imperative that shows the value of school integration AND reform that doesn't focus on the punitive.
1) Both parents and policy makers need to listen to young people more AND
2) We should not take the perspective of a 16 year old as the final word on whether her parents school decisions ultimately served her well. I'm waiting for another article 10 years from now.
Nikole Hannah Jones will be interviewed by her daughter for an episode of “This American Life” airing on September 27 at 7pm CT https://t.co/MMDyqFxs8s
@JHWeissmann Curious how you get 2 %? Is that the number of voters who currently have kids in child care? Because my kids have been out of child care for years but it’s fresh enough that I care about it a lot. Plus the huge % who are educators. I think you’re underestimating the universe.
.@Janeese4DC’s Ward 3 Listening session is so large that we had to move it to an outdoor tent AND despite my best efforts I could not fit the entire crowd! 🤗
