The next Big Con will be to lump together "Russia" and "Climate Change," so that spending billions preparing to fight an apocalyptic war with the former becomes conceptually interchangeable with fighting the latter.
This is, of course, dangerous nonsense.
"Most of the British public are sort of blissfully unaware of the scale and nature and intensity of some of the threats."
Lord Harris, Chair of the UK independent National Preparedness Commission, says there's a "general complacency" in views about risks to the UK.

Is the US nuclear arsenal even a strategic asset?
Writer Sina Azodi scrutinises the limited coercive leverage of nuclear weapons in current and historical conflicts involving nuclear-armed states.
BREAKING: JPMorgan warns a large-scale global food supply crisis could hit within the next year, forecasting global food inflation to nearly double from 2.8% now to 5% by early 2027, per JPMorgan Global Research.
The direct driver is fertilizer, 1/3 of the world's nitrogen fertilizer moves through the Strait of Hormuz, which Iran has kept shut since February. Unlike oil, there’s no strategic reserve for fertilizer and nothing to release.
Nitrogen fertilizer goes into about half of all crops grown globally.

Humongous Ape on X exhibits more sophisticated national security thinking than the £65bn per year Ministry of Defence (which kept its only firefighting aircraft in Cyprus during the UK inferno summer).
You can create a Land Army that plants trees, harvests crops, fights floods and warns of wildfire or you can make kids into unpaid slaves on the Treat Conveyorbelt.
CND condemns British deal with Ukraine which will use AI ‘battle-tested’ tech to target protestors at British military bases. It is a chilling attack on our right to protest. Burnham must reverse this decision now!
🚨 EXCLUSIVE: Germany is in talks to invest in Britain’s nuclear deterrent, The Telegraph understands.
Berlin is considering offering financial support for Trident as it spearheads efforts to reinforce Europe’s nuclear umbrella ⤵️

There is a problem here: many people in the UK have already been going hungry, with this number increasing sharply over the past decade.
In the meantime, the government has shown more concern with the BAE share value (bolstered by £bns in tax money) than hungry citizens.
🚨 THE GOVERNMENT IS NOW TELLING BRITONS TO STOCKPILE FOOD
For years I have been warning that food security is national security.
I was called hysterical. Alarmist. Loopy Liz 🤪
Now the Cabinet Office @downingstreet is preparing to tell British households to stock up on tinned food and bottled water because of the threat from climate change, hostile states and national emergencies.
Household preparedness is sensible.
But where is the national food preparedness plan?
Britain’s farmers have just suffered a catastrophic harvest. Farming organisations warn some won’t have the cash to plant next year’s crops or replace livestock. Drought is forcing livestock farmers to use winter fodder now. Fertiliser and energy supplies are exposed to geopolitical shocks.
Telling 70 million people to keep tins in the cupboard deals with the symptom.
Protecting British farming, rebuilding food production, securing fertiliser and energy, investing in water storage and restoring the closest possible food-trading relationship with Europe deals with the cause.
You cannot stockpile your way out of a prolonged food-security crisis.
Britain needs a COBRA-level food resilience strategy which includes a food production plan. Now.
🇬🇧 Food security is national security.
History shows us that nuclear weapons are no guarantee of security for the countries that possess them.
Recent and ongoing wars show the traditional norms of "deterrence" have broken down: Nuclear-armed states often struggle to deter retaliation and aggression by adversaries.
British political caste is mostly ignoring climate change as an impending mega-threat, stupidly believing environmental politics is decreasing living standards (a Murdoch media hallucination).
But it is their inaction that will demolish UK living standards and national security.
The UK's annual nuclear weapons spend ($13bn) could easily insulate against impending food insecurity.
But British politicians have determined that 'national security' is about permanently threatening omnicide, instead of things like having a well-fed population.
British government allocates £63bn on nuclear weapons over the next 4 years - with plenty more where that came from.
All this supposedly for 'national security'.
Meanwhile:
🚨 BRITAIN FACES FOOD SHORTAGES WITHIN MONTHS
Farmers have been warning about this for years. Now more than a dozen farming organisations say British agriculture has reached 🔥 crisis point 🔥
This isn’t simply about a poor harvest.
Farmers are warning they may not have enough money to plant next year’s crops or replace livestock.
Think about what that means.
🌾 The worst harvest since records began in 1984.
🥔 Potatoes and carrots expected to be smaller than usual.
🐑 500+ bluetongue cases.
🚜 Agricultural input costs soaring.
💰 Farm cashflow collapsing.
🌍 Fertiliser supply and prices exposed to the war in Iran and Strait of Hormuz.
And livestock farmers are already using winter fodder in August. Some are being forced to sell animals they cannot afford to feed.
Those rising cattle kill numbers aren’t evidence of abundant food. They may be evidence of Britain’s productive capacity being liquidated.
Kill the breeding herd and you don’t replace it next spring.
Fail to plant the wheat this autumn and you don’t harvest it next summer.
Lose farmers and productive capacity and cheap imports may disguise the problem … until the imports aren’t cheap or aren’t available.
This is why I keep saying food security is national security.
🆘 Britain needs an emergency COBRA-level food-production plan now, not after shortages appear on supermarket shelves @andyburnham@labourlewis
🇬🇧 You cannot import your way out of a global food crisis.

The £50bn+ nuclear waste dump planned for Cumbria, without which industry figures doubt the sustainability of UK nuclear, was badged "unachievable" by Treasury in 2025.
The nuclear waste question has been kicked down the road for decades. Future generations will bear the costs.
What lessons can be learnt about "nuclear deterrence" from the South Asian context?
Sadia Tasleem explains how Pakistan's nuclear weapons policy has not only failed to deter conflict, but poses a serious strategic and security liability during conventional warfighting.
Since Finland joined NATO, a brutal austerity programme to pay for the alliance's 5% spending target has officially put 20% of the population at risk of poverty. Among the beneficiaries of Finland's switch from welfare to warfare is the Israeli arms company Rafael. Link next post
“If Hinkley C had been completed, on schedule and within budget, we would still be paying them twice as much for electricity as for onshore wind, and a new gas plant would produce electricity at even higher cost than Hinkley. It is a myth that gas is cheaper than renewables. One big gas price spike from a war or other major disruption costs Britain more than the entire Net Zero project. We saw the economic risk of dependence on fossil fuels when the wars in Ukraine and Iran sent energy bills skyrocketing. When a political party that receives lots of fossil fuel money says you should switch from the cheapest electricity sources to the most expensive, exercise caution. When they claim huge overall savings, best wait until some independent experts have a look before you start celebrating the mathematical miracle.”
