It’s interesting to see scholarship decisions becoming more widely reported by the mainstream football media.

It reflects just how valuable producing your own superstar has become. Developing the next Bellingham, Kane or Saka is far cheaper than paying the “English tax” on someone else’s, even if plenty of clubs still end up doing exactly that.

Player valuations have gone through the roof this summer for a number of reasons, and that’s inevitably had a knock-on effect on academies.

If clubs want to keep hold of their next elite talent, they’re increasingly having to hand out huge first professional contracts.

Where does it end? What does this look like in five years’ time? £100k-a-week first pro deals?

Clubs could end up having U21 teams with the wage budget of a championship club.

It feels like football needs stronger financial regulation that also considers the impact these market forces are having on youth development.

Emerson Nwaneri stays with Arsenal.
After lengthy negotiations the midfielder will stay in North London. It is reported there was interest from Chelsea and City, however the player is happy at Arsenal and chose to stay. Emerson is a big prospect and will be a scholar for Arsenal.
