Sgt James Hutchens was working on July 2, 1992 in the radio shop garage where he was exposed to lethal levels of CO when a vehicle was inadvertently left running in the shop. The accumulation of fumes proved fatal to Sgt Hutchens. Sgt Hutchens was survived by his wife and son.
It was a rough morning for one mother duck in Central Islip but thanks to some SCPD officers and members of the Central Islip Fire Department, the stress didn't last too long.

Members of the Suffolk County Police Department attended New York State Senator Monica Martinez's Senior Fun Day at Tanner Park in Copiague. Seniors enjoyed Tai Chi and Latin dance classes, along with lawn games and other activities.

A 911 caller reported a deer stranded in the Brightwaters canal and Third Precinct officers responded and worked alongside good Samaritans to safely bring the wayward soul back to shore.

Thousands came together to enjoy food, music and activities but more importantly the gathering represented bringing the community together.
Today, SCPD remembers Det. Carmine Macchia who died on 6/15/78. During the pursuit of a stolen vehicle, his and P.O. Al Sabia's vehicle crashed at the intersection of Straight Path and Sunrise Hwy in Lindenhurst. Macchia died at Brunswick Hospital. He was survived by his wife.
Suffolk County Police Commissioner Kevin Catalina joined members of the SCPD and the department’s LGBTQ Society taking part in the 4th Annual Pride Parade in Patchogue.

SCPD members took part in a culinary competition at Atria Patchogue. Atria's Dir. of Culinary Services Chef Tom and Sous Chef Alan faced off against P.O. Thomas Joy and Owner of TOA Asian Fusion Evan Chen for an epic cook-off.

SCPD today remembers PO Albert Willetts who died in the line of duty 6/3/71. PO Willets was involved in a crash on Route 25 in Selden when a vehicle struck his motorcycle. PO Willetts died from injuries sustained in the crash. PO Willetts was survived by his wife & 5 children.
SCPD remembers Police Officer Carmelo Cattano who died in the line of duty on 5/30/63. PO Cattano was in a motor vehicle crash, during which he was thrown from his vehicle. PO Cattano was taken to Huntington Hospital where he died. Officer Cattano was survived by his wife.
