The first woman elected to the United States Senate without having been previously appointed was South Dakota's Gladys Pyle.
Gladys became the first woman elected to the SD Legislature in 1922 and was within a whisker of being the first woman to be elected Governor in 1930.

The collections are returning to the Cultural Heritage Center. The reason for the original move was simple. A renovation generates dust and dust erodes the patina of the collection.
The Historical Society has approximately 34,000 artifacts and 17,000 bankers boxes of paper!

The history of Public Broadcasting in SD traces its roots to KUSD (AM), now silent. This station was one of the oldest educational radio stations in the United States.
ON THIS DAY IN SD HISTORY 1972: The National Park Service opens the Scenic Cave Tour route and visitor center at Jewel Cave after five years of improvements. The cave's name comes from the crystals that line its walls, and it is the third-longest cave in the world.
ON THIS DAY IN SD HISTORY 1936: Rapid City residents dedicate Dinosaur Park on the city's Skyline Drive. The park features seven concrete dinosaurs that were constructed as part of a Works Progress Administration project.
